SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – What a week in the desert it was for Ohio State. Neal Shipley played amazing, the team showed grit to force its way into a playoff, which it eventually won, and then notched a Top 15 finish at the NCAA Championship.
The Buckeyes carded a final round 294 and would finish in 15th place. Shipley had a tough final round but that didn't take the shine of a tremendous week that saw him finish in a tie for 29th at 4-over par.
The day started with a bang as the team won a playoff with Texas Tech for 15th place to make the 54-hole cut. One player from each team played a hole from 14-18 and the team score was the cumulative score from each hole. JonErik Alford made par on No. 14, Jackson Chandler got up-and-down for par on No. 16, Maxwell Moldovan narrowly missed his par putt on No. 17 and Adam Wallin made a great par from the fairway bunker on the long par-4 18th. As he had all week, Shipley came up clutch, burying a 40-foot birdie putt on No. 15 to give the Buckeyes an even-par cumulative score. Texas Tech had four pars and a bogey for a total score of 1-over par.
That gave the Buckeyes a tee time in the final round, but they started 13 shots out of the eighth position. The Top 8 teams at the end of the round on Monday advanced to match play. Needing to make something happen, the Buckeyes played aggressively, which isn't the typical approach around Grayhawk. It ended up just not being the Buckeyes' Day. They shot a 294 and remained in 15th place.
Shipley posted a final round 79 and to finish at 4-over.
Maxwell Moldovan started his day 5-over through five holes but played 3-under the rest of the way to card a 72. That capped a great season which saw him set the program's single-season scoring record for the third-consecutive season, finishing at 70.64. That was almost half a stroke lower than his average last year.
JonErik Alford made four birdies in his final collegiate round as he carded a 4-over 74. Adam Wallin matched his low round of the week with a final round 73. Jackson Chandler finished-up with a 75.
This was a cap to a great season for the Buckeyes. They won twice, including their home event, the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. They qualified for the NCAA Championship for the second-consecutive season, which is something the program hadn't done since the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
