
Buckeyes in Action at NCAA Singles Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Buckeyes Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff traveled to Orlando, Fla., for the 2023 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship. The 64-player bracket is single elimination, with one round each day. All matches are at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Round of 32 (Tuesday)
In the second round, No. 20-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers faced No. 1 seed Fiona Crawley of North Carolina. Cantos Siemers broke to open the match but Crawley won the next six games to take the first set, 6-1. In the second set, the players traded breaks to start. Crawley won the next two games, with a break and a hold (both on the no-ad point) for a 3-1 lead. The players held the next four games before a break on the no-ad point gave Crawley the set, 6-3, and the match.
Round of 64 (Monday)
No. 20-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers advanced to the second round with a three-set victory over No. 41-ranked Carolina Gomez-Alonso. The Buckeye won the first two games of the first set, breaking for a 6-4 win. In the second set, Gomez-Alonso jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory. Cantos Siemers won the first three games of the third set before the Razorback got back on serve, 2-3. The Buckeye broke on the no-ad point for a 4-2 lead and was able to close out the set, 6-2.
No. 30-ranked Sydni Ratliff fell to No. 45 Carly Briggs of Florida in the Round of 64. Ratliff rallied from a 2-5 deficit in the first round, with the set going to a tiebreak, won by Briggs, 7-1. In the second set Briggs opened with a break and won four of the first five games. Ratliff won the next two for a 4-3 match but Briggs responded with a hold and a break to advance with a 6-3 set win.
