COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State opened the NCAA Auburn Regional on Monday with a round of 6-over 294 and are tied for fifth in the 13-team field through 18 holes. The top five teams at the end of play on Wednesday will advance to the NCAA Championship in Arizona later this month.
The Buckeyes got off to a good start and were holding the early lead. Neal Shipley and JonErik Alford were both 3-under through seven holes and tied for the individual lead. The group found a little trouble through the tougher stretch of the course, but the team is in the mix with two rounds to play.
Maxwell Moldovan continued his strong season, posting a 1-under 71 on Monday. He made three birdies to counter a pair of bogeys to post one of just 10 under-par rounds on the day. He is tied for sixth heading into Tuesday.
Following his strong start, Shipley made three-consecutive bogeys around the turn but played his final eight holes in even par to post an opening 72. Alford also rebounded from a tough couple of holes at the turn and would finish with a 2-over 74.
Adam Wallin made three birdies in his opening round 77 and Jackson Chandler posted a 7-over 79 to round out the Buckeye five.
Ohio State is paired with No. 1 Vanderbilt and TCU in the second round.
