COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State found itself on the short end of a 6-3 decision in Friday's series-opener against Purdue at Buckeye Field. With the loss, the Buckeyes are 28-15 on the season and 8-7 in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers improve to 21-24 (4-11 Big Ten).
The Short Story
After grabbing a 3-0 lead in the third inning on a Kami Kortokrax home run, the Buckeyes saw their advantage shrink to 3-2 in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Purdue. The Boilermakers then got the biggest hit of the game, a two-out grand slam in the fifth inning from Olivia McFadden.
The hit gave Purdue a 6-3 lead and while Ohio State would threaten in the sixth and seventh inning, it couldn't push across any runs.
Starting pitcher Allison Smith struck out 11 Boilermakers for the eighth double-digit strikeout game of the season.
How The Runs Were Scored
- In the bottom of the third inning, Kaitlyn Farley led off with a single, and following a sacrifice bunt and walk to Melina Wilkison, Kortokrax came up with one out and two on.
- Her home run went to straightaway center field and was her seventh of the season.
- Purdue's home run in the fourth inning came off the bat of starting pitcher Alex Echazarreta.
- In the fifth inning, Smith struck out the first two batters but a walk, single and another walk loaded the bases for McFadden.
- Ohio State would send the tying run to the plate in both the sixth and seventh innings but couldn't string together a rally.
- For the game, the Buckeye left 11 runners on base.
Buckeye This and That
- With Kortokrax's home run was her seventh of the season – second-most on the team – it was the first one she's hit at Buckeye Field.
- Smith struck out the side in the second inning and fanned six of the first seven batters of the game.
- Emily Ruck pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief and did not allow a hit.
- Hackenbracht, Meggie Otte and Kaitlyn Farley each had two hits.
- Farley also had a one-out double in the fourth inning.
- Mariah Rodriguez's single in the sixth inning was the 96th hit of her career.
