
No. 9 Buckeyes Close Regular Season Out East

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 Ohio State women’s tennis team wraps up the regular season this weekend with two road matches. The Buckeyes will face Rutgers at noon Saturday in East Brunswick (indoor) or Piscataway (outdoor), N.J. and Maryland at noon Sunday in College Park, Md.

The Buckeyes are 15-6 overall and 8-1 in Big Ten play. Rutgers is 9-10 on the year and 1-8 in the Big Ten, while Maryland, which will host Penn State Saturday, enters the weekend 15-7 and 4-5 in B1G action.
Buckeyes vs. Scarlet Knights
- The Buckeyes have an 8-2 record against the Scarlet Knights all-time.
- In Columbus last year, Ohio State was a 4-0 winner over Rutgers. The teams last met in New Jersey Feb. 21, 2021, with Ohio State notching a 7-0 victory.
- Last weekend, Rutgers lost on the road at Iowa and at Nebraska.
Buckeyes vs. Terps
- Ohio State is 10-1 all-time against Maryland and posted a 5-2 win in Columbus last April.
- The last meeting in College Park was Feb. 19, 2021, a 5-2 Ohio State win.
- In Big Ten play, the Terps have wins over Indiana, Rutgers, Minnesota and Nebraska this year. Last weekend, Maryland won at Nebraska but was clipped at Iowa, 4-3.
- Maryland is ranked 59th this week as a team. The doubles tandem of Mary Brumfield and Selma Cadar is No. 69.
In the Rankings
- Ohio State is ninth in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings this week. The squad has been in the Top 10 since the start of computer rankings (Feb. 19).
- The Buckeyes have wins against six teams currently in the Top 25 – No. 4 Georgia, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 16 Auburn, No. 18 Oklahoma State, No. 21 Arizona State and No. 24 Wisconsin. Ohio State dropped matches to No. 2 Texas A&M (twice), No. 3 Michigan, No. 5 NC State and No. 19 UCLA.
- Three Buckeyes and two doubles teams are in the ITA rankings this week. In singles, Irina Cantos Siemers is No. 18, Sydni Ratliff is No. 36 and Shelly Bereznyak is No. 91. As a doubles team, Cantos Siemers and Ratliff are ranked 28th.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State enters the weekend 16-6 overall. The squad beat Michigan State last Friday and then had an eight-match winning streak end with a 4-1 loss at No. 6 Michigan last Sunday.
- Ohio State is 8-1 in the Big Ten, tied with Illinois for second. Michigan clinched the regular season title with an 11-0 record.
- The Buckeyes have secured a Top 5 finish in the league standings. The Top 4 get a double bye into the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes and Illini have not met this season. If the teams finish the regular season tied, the tiebreaker (after head to head) is ITA ranking following this weekend’s action. This week, the Buckeyes are ninth and the Illini are No. 31.
- The loss to the Wolverines ended a 29-match winning streak for the Buckeyes in Big Ten regular season matches. The streak started March 5, 2021 (following a 4-3 loss to Michigan Feb. 28, 2021). Ohio State was 11-0 in conference play in 2022 and 15-1 in 2021.
- Lucia Marzal, who had an 11-match winning streak end vs. the Wolverines, has a 14-2 ledger in dual matches, while Shelly Bereznyak is 13-1 and Irina Cantos Siemers is 12-4. In B1G matches, Danielle Willson is a team-best 6-0, with Bereznyak and Cantos Siemers 5-0, Marzal 5-1 and Kolie Allen 4-0.
- Willson enters the weekend on a seven-match winning streak in completed matches, Bereznyak has won her last six completed and Cantos Siemers has won five in a row.
- Overall, Marzal is first with 21 wins this year and Sydni Ratliff is second with 20 wins. Bereznyak and Cantos Siemers each have 19.
- In doubles, the tandem of Allen and Danielle Willson is first for the squad with an 11-3 mark in dual matches. Bereznyak and Isabelle Boulais are 7-4 in dual play as a tandem.
- Allen has a team-high 13 victories in doubles dual action, with Willson second with 11.
- The Buckeyes finished their regular season home slate 13-1, with the only loss to NC State, 4-3.
- Marzal and Kathleen Jones have been selected for the new NextGen Program in the Ohio State Athletics Department. The Schedule Ahead
- The Big Ten Tournament is at Purdue next week.
- Seeds 11-14 start play next Wednesday (April 26), Nos. 5-10 begin in the second round next Thursday (April 27) and the Top 4 seeds kick off action in the quarterfinals next Friday (April 28). The semifinals are set for next Saturday (April 29) and the final will be played at noon next Sunday (April 30).
