Ohio State Drops Rubber Match with Golden Gophers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes (13-13, 1-5 Big Ten) fell to Minnesota (7-20, 2-1 Big Ten), 6-2, in the final game of the teams’ three-game series on Sunday.

Game Recap

In the bottom of the first, Henry Kaczmar reached base on a wild pitch. Kade Kern singled to right field, followed by a single from Tyler Pettorini to load the bases. Cole Andrews hit into a double play, but it gave Kaczmar enough time to score to put Ohio State ahead, 1-0.
The Golden Gophers, however, got on top in the top of the second, scoring five runs to take a four-run lead over the Buckeyes, 5-1.
In the bottom of the second, Hank Thomas drew a walk to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on another wild pitch. Trey Lipsey was walked with two outs to put runners on the corners, but both were stranded.
An RBI single from Minnesota in the top of the fourth extended its lead, 6-1.
Caden Kaiser walked to begin the bottom of the fifth frame. Kaczmar and Kern then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. A sac fly from Pettorini sent Kaiser home to cut the Minnesota lead to four, 6-2.
Matthew Graveline hit an infield single to lead off the sixth and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes in the remainder of the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, with two outs, bases were once again loaded after Andrews, Nick Erwin and Kaiser all drew walks, but all three runners were left on base.
Pettorini had the final hit of the game for Ohio State, singling to center field in the bottom of the ninth.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

Kern and Pettorini led the Buckeyes in hits with two each.
George Eisenhardt (1-2) took the loss. He gave up five runs on three hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
Justin Eckhardt and Will Pfennig each fanned two in appearances out of the bullpen.
