COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team closed out its weekend homestand with another win, knocking off Wisconsin 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Buckeyes are now 14-0 this season at home and 21-2 overall.
Cannon Kingsley, JJ Tracy and James Trotter all claimed a pair of victories on Sunday. Trotter provided the match clinching point to improve to 19-0 on the season. Kingsley outlasted Jared Pratt 12-10 in a super-tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets.
Ohio State extends its win-streak against Wisconsin to 33-consecutive matches and improves to 4-0 to start Big Ten play. Head coach Ty Tucker has never lost to Wisconsin in his career.
Doubles
- Wisconsin had won the doubles point in its previous six matches, including against No. 5 Michigan last weekend. But the Buckeyes had little trouble stopping the streak on Sunday.
- On court two, No. 7-ranked Lutschaunig and Trotter won the first four games against Robin Parts and Sebastian Vile, before easing their way to a 6-1 victory. The pair is now above .500 with a record of 7-6 after playing the majority of their matches at doubles one.
- Cannon Kingsley and Tracy secured the doubles point on court three with a win over Jared Pratt and Mihailo Popovic. The Buckeye duo earned a break at 4-3 and held serve at 5-3 to win the match. The pair is now 11-4 overall this season.
- On court one, Robert Cash and Justin Boulais were on serve and tied 4-4 with the No. 41 ranked team of Michael Minasyan and Gabriel Huber when the point was clinched.
Singles
- The Buckeyes carried their momentum from the doubles matches into their singles play. Tracy and Anthrop raced out to 4-0 leads in the first set, setting the pace of their match and boosting the team energy.
- After his 4-0 lead in the first set, Tracy would win the set 6-1 over Huber. One game is all Tracy would give up, as he convincingly shut out Huber in the second set for a dominant 6-0 victory, adding a second tally for the Buckeyes.
- Anthrop won 11 consecutive games to start the match, winning the first set 6-0 and the next set 6-1 over Robin Parts. The redshirt-freshman f continues to have a strong year, moving to 13-3.
- Trotter finished next with his solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Sebastian Vile on court three to remain perfect on the season.
- The fifth point came shortly after as freshman Alexander Bernard finished-off Minasyan 6-4, 6-2 for his third consecutive victory.
- Kingsley rolled to a 6-3 first set win over Pratt but then the Badger turned the table in the set, winning 6-3 to force a super-breaker. Pratt took an early two-point lead and held that edge until Kingsley was able to stave off a match point and tie the breaker at 9-9. After trading points, Kingsley won back-to-back points to take the breaker 12-10.
- Justin Boulais would drop his match on court two to Mihailo Popovic 6-2, 7-6(3)
Up Next
- The Buckeyes hit the road next weekend for a pair of matches in that state up north. Ohio State will play Michigan State on Friday at 4 p.m. and then face No. 5 Michigan at noon on Easter Sunday.
