Buckeyes Fall to No. 2 Northwestern

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's lacrosse team lost a Big Ten game to No. 2 Northwestern, 17-11, Saturday evening in Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Wildcats (14-1, 5-0 B1G) scored the game's first two goals en route to a 5-2 lead over the Buckeyes (5-10, 0-5 B1G) through the first quarter. Northwestern pushed the advantage to 10-4 at halftime. Each team scored seven times in the second half.
Jamie Lasda led the Buckeyes with a career-high eight points, with four goals and four assists, including the 100th point of her Buckeye career. Goalie Regan Alexander matched her career best with 15 saves.
The nine members of the Buckeye senior class were recognized pregame – Nicole Ferrara, Chloe Johnson, Ava Keethler, Jamie Level, Claire Morris, Caly O'Brien, Bryce Pfundstein, Emily Rezabek and Ashley Turner. Seniors scored seven goals for the Scarlet and Gray in the game.
The Schedule Ahead
- The regular season wraps up at Rutgers Thursday, with the teams meeting in Piscataway, N.J., at 6 p.m. on BTN.
- After a quarterfinal round slate of games at campus sites hosted by higher seeds April 29, Ohio State will host the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and final. The semis are set for 6 and 8 p.m. May 4 and the final will be played at 8 p.m. May 6. Ticket information will be coming soon.
How it Happened
- Northwestern scored twice in the game's first two minutes before Jamie Lasda found Chloe Johnson in the middle for a player-up goal at 11:18.
- Northwestern scored three of the next four goals to close out the quarter with a 5-2 lead. Lasda scored unassisted for the Buckeyes in the stretch.
- After Nicole Ferrara found Jamie Level for a fast break goal at 9:53, the Wildcats went on a five-goal run to push the lead to 10-3 with 58 seconds left in the second. Caly O'Brien ended the streak, as she scored with 15 seconds remaining in the half. The Wildcats led 10-4 at the break.
- Northwestern scored two goals in 60 seconds, at 11:34 and 10:34, to stretch its advantage to 12-4 early in the third quarter.
- Lasda and Ferrara connected for a player-up goal at 7:36.
- Northwestern scored a player-up goal just over two minutes later before the Buckeyes had three of the final four goals of the third quarter.
- Ferrara scored off a Lasda pass – Lasda's 100th career point – at 4:22.
- After a NU goal at 2:25, Lasda converted a free position chance at 1:25. Zoe Coleman passed from behind the cage to O'Brien in front and she scored with eight seconds left in the third. The Wildcats led 14-8 through 45 minutes.
- Northwestern scored the first two goals of the quarter, at 13:35 and 11:13.
- Ohio State notched the next two, both by Lasda. She scored unassisted at 10:17 and then all alone in front off a pass from Maddie Barhorst at 4:24.
- A player-up goal from Northwestern came at 1:15.
- With time winding down, Lasda found Ashley Turner with a behind the back pass and Turner scored on a bounce shot far side with a second remaining for the 17-11 final.
- Ohio State was outshot, 44-23, in the game. Regan Alexander had a career-high tying 15 saves in the game, playing 58:07. Senior Claire Morris started and had one save in 1:53, allowing two goals. Two Northwestern goalies combined for three saves.
- The Wildcats had the edge in ground balls, 16-12, and draw controls, 20-11. Alexander led the Buckeyes with four ground balls. Johnson had five draw controls and O'Brien had three for Ohio State. Ava Keethler led the Buckeyes with two caused turnovers.
Buckeye This and That
- Lasda has a team-best 29 assists and 54 points this season, both career highs, and is second with 25 goals. The eight points passed her previous best of seven, set earlier this season vs. Louisville. It was her third game with more than three goals and her second game with four or more assists.
- Alexander had her ninth game this season with 10-plus saves. She also had 15 saves at Marquette April 5.
- Ferrara, who is on 10-game goal and point streaks, has a team-high 37 goals and is second with 47 points.
- Chloe Johnson now has 234 draw controls in her career. She is second all-time, three behind Molly Wood, who had 237 from 2015-18.
