No. 7 Buckeyes Head North for B1G Matches

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7 Ohio State women’s tennis team will close out its regular season slate with four road matches. This weekend, the Buckeyes will play at Michigan State at 5 p.m. Friday in East Lansing, Mich., and will then take on No. 6 Michigan at noon Sunday in Ann Arbor.

The Buckeyes are 14-5 overall and 7-0 in Big Ten play, entering on a seven-match winning streak. Michigan State is 8-12 on the year and 1-8 in B1G action. The Wolverines, who will host Penn State Saturday, are 17-3 this spring and 9-0 in the Big Ten.
Buckeyes vs. Wolverines
- Ohio State and Michigan met earlier this season (Feb. 12) in consolation play of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, with the Wolverines posting a 4-1 win. In that match, Michigan captured the doubles point with victories on courts one and two and then picked up wins at the top three singles spots for the victory.
- Last season, the Buckeyes and Wolverines split two matches. Ohio State won 4-3 in Columbus in the regular season en route to the regular season title and the Wolverines won 4-0 in the Big Ten Tournament final for the postseason crown.
- The last match between the teams in Ann Arbor was March 28, 2021, a 4-3 Buckeye win. The Buckeyes opened the spring season in Ann Arbor at the Michigan Invitational hidden dual event.
- In the last 10 meetings between the teams, each squad has won five times.
- Michigan, ranked sixth, is 17-3 on the year and closes out its Big Ten schedule this weekend, taking on Penn State Saturday and the Buckeyes Sunday. The Wolverines are 9-0 in B1G play. The squad’s losses are to No. 1 North Carolina, No. 5 Pepperdine and No. 17 Florida (current rankings).
- Michigan is ranked sixth this week. The squad has four ranked singles players – No. 23 Jaedan Brown, No. 45 Julia Fliegner, No. 47 Kari Miller and No. 67 Lily Jones. Miller and Brown make up the nation’s No. 2-ranked doubles team.
Buckeyes vs. Spartans
- Against Michigan State, Ohio State has an all-time mark of 41-15, with wins in the last eight matches.
- The teams met in Columbus last April, with the Buckeyes winning 4-0. The last match in East Lansing was in March 2021, a 6-1 Buckeye victory.
- Michigan State is 8-10 on the year and 1-8 in the Big Ten. The squad last played March 31 and April 2, when it fell to Illinois 4-0 and Northwestern 4-1, respectively.

- Ohio State is seventh in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings this week. The squad has been in the Top 10 since the start of computer rankings (Feb. 19).
- The Buckeyes have wins against seven teams currently in the Top 25 – No. 4 Georgia, No. 14 Tennessee, No. 15 Auburn, No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 18 Oklahoma State, No. 21 Wisconsin and No. 23 Arizona State. Ohio State dropped matches to No. 2 Texas A&M (twice), No. 6 Michigan, No. 8 NC State and No. 24 UCLA.
- Three Buckeyes and two doubles teams are in the ITA rankings this week. In singles, Irina Cantos Siemers is No. 22, Sydni Ratliff is No. 35 and Shelly Bereznyak is No. 90. As a doubles team, Cantos Siemers and Ratliff are ranked 26th.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State has a 15-5 mark overall this season and is 7-0 in Big Ten action, with all seven wins by shutout. The squad enters the weekend on a seven-match winning streak.
- The Buckeyes have notched B1G wins over Penn State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern, Nebraska and Iowa. Ohio State is the defending Big Ten regular season champion and was 11-0 in B1G play in 2022.
- The Scarlet and Gray posted three wins at home last weekend, downing Kentucky 4-2 Wednesday before 4-0 victories over Nebraska and Iowa.
- The Buckeyes finished their regular season home slate 13-1, with the only loss to NC State, 4-3.
- Shelly Bereznyak and Lucia Marzal lead the Buckeyes with 13-1 marks in singles dual matches. Marzal is on a 10-match winning streak and Bereznyak has won six in a row. Danielle Willson is 6-0 in dual matches. Irina Cantos Siemers is 10-4 in singles dual play, Kolie Allen has nine wins and Sydni Ratliff has eight.
- Overall, Marzal and Ratliff are first with 20 wins this year, followed by Bereznyak with 19 and Cantos Siemers and Allen with 17 each.
- In doubles, the tandem of Allen and Danielle Willson is first for the squad with a 10-2 mark in dual matches. Bereznyak and Isabelle Boulais are 6-3 in dual play as a tandem.
- Allen has a team-high 12 victories in doubles dual action, with Willson second with 10.
- Marzal and Kathleen Jones have been selected for the new NextGen Program in the Ohio State Athletics Department.
