Title IX: Sue Marcellus
3/7/2023 10:00:00 AM | Field Hockey, Title IX
It's not a stretch to call Sue Marcellus to most prolific field hockey player in Ohio State history. The numbers bear that out, and more than 40 years after her playing days ended, they've stood the test of time.
The only athlete in program history to have her number retired, Marcellus is the all-time leader in career goals (117), career points (254) and single-season points (82), earning All-America honors in 1977, 1978 and 1979. She was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1977 to 1980 and member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team.
In the three seasons that she was a first team All-American, Marcellus led the Buckeyes to 36 total victories. In 1978, she set two records that still stand today: single-season goals (40) and points (82). Two years prior, as a freshman in 1976, she totaled 80 points (36 goals, eight assists). No other play since has finished with more than 67 points in any single season.
