
No. 11 Buckeyes Start MIVA Season With 3-1 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 11 Ohio State (8-3, 1-0) opened Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play against McKendree (5-3, 0-1) Thursday and came away with a 3-1 win at the Covelli Center.
The Buckeyes won 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21 to start the MIVA season off with a win.
Samuel Clark led Ohio State with 21 kills. Jacob Pasteur added 14. Noah Platfoot led the Buckeyes in both digs (14) and assists (43).
How it Happened
Set 1
After the Bearcats scored the first two points of the match, the Buckeyes evened the set at 2-all. The squads traded points with the Buckeyes taking their first lead (7-5) on a Jack Stevens ace and a McKendree error. The Bearcats tied it at 8-all before a Jacob Pasteur kill put the Buckeyes back up, 9-8. Kills by Pasteur and Stevens upped Ohio State’s lead to 11-9. McKendree took a 14-13 lead but a Bearcats error tied it at 14-all. Another McKendree error and a kill by Samuel Clark put the Buckeyes back on top 16-14. The Bearcats called timeout after the Buckeyes went up 17-14 on a McKendree error. The Ohio State lead increased to 19-14 on a Young and Noah Platfoot block and a Pasteur kill. The Bearcats stormed back with a 4-0 run but after an Ohio State timeout, the Buckeyes went back up 20-18. McKendree tied the match at 21-all but the Buckeyes went ahead 24-23 before the Bearcats called its final timeout. When the teams returned to the court Noah Platfoot killed an overpass from a Clark serve for the winner (25-23). Ohio State hit .333 in the opener while the Bearcats connected at a .176 rate. Clark led the Buckeyes with five kills.

Set 2
After a pair of long rallies and an Ohio State error the set was tied at 3-all. The Bearcats took a 5-3 lead after a 4-0 run. Ohio State called timeout after McKendree went up 8-5. The Bearcats increased their lead to 13-9 on an OSU error. A 5-2 Ohio State run made it 15-14 Bearcats. McKendree went back on top 17-14 and maintained its lead until a Pasteur kill tied it at 20-all to complete a 4-1 OSU run. The Bearcats called timeout and the teams began to trade points until McKendree scored twice after it was tied at 22-all to set up set point. Ohio State called timeout but the Bearcats scored the final point to win 25-22 to even the match at 1-all. Ohio State hit .125 in the second behind the .267 turned in by McKendree. Clark continued to lead both teams with 10 kills.

Set 3
The Bearcats continued to apply pressure in taking a 3-1 lead. A Stevens kill and a McKendree error ended an OSU 4-1 run to put the Buckeyes up 5-4. Clark made it 7-5 Buckeyes with a kill. The Bearcats tied it at 8-all and the set went back-and-forth before the Bearcats ended a 5-1 run to take an 11-9 lead. Ohio State called timeout. Ohio State then rallied and went on a 5-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Bearcats then called timeout but the run continued for the Buckeyes with kills from Howard and Pasteur for a 16-11 lead. A Pasteur kill kept Ohio State up five at 19-14 before Stevens and Young added kills for a 21-14 Buckeye advantage. Stevens then put away the final point of the set to give the Buckeyes a 25-18 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes outhit the Bearcats .312-.114 in the third. Clark (16) and Pasteur (10) lead the Buckeyes in kills after three.

Set 4
A Clark kill put Ohio State up 3-2 and the set then seesawed until Pasteur put away an overpass and Stevens recorded an ace for an 8-5 Ohio State lead. McKendree called timeout after a Bearcats error made it 10-6 Buckeyes. McKendree called timeout and chipped away, drawing to within two several times. Kills by Pasteur and Clark made it 18-14 Buckeyes. Ohio State called timeout after McKendree made it 19-17 Buckeyes. Ohio State scored the next two on kills from Clark and Ben Braun to go back up by four (21-17). The Buckeyes then finished off the set (25-21) to win the match, 3-1.
