COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 13 Ohio State (7-3) won in four sets, 3-1, over No. 10 USC (6-4) Saturday at Rec Hall on the Penn State campus in the Big Ten/Pac 12 Challenge.
The Buckeyes won 25-19, 20-25, 25-20 and 25-18 for their seventh win of the season.
Jacob Pasteur led both teams with 18 kills while adding a team-high nine digs. Sam Clark added 10 kills.
Noah Platfoot was credited with 43 assists and nine digs.
How it Happened
Set 1
The Trojans jumped to a 4-1 lead before the Buckeyes cut it to 4-3 on a USC error. Ohio State tied it at 6-all after a 3-0 run. Ohio State took its first lead at 8-7 on a Noah Platfoot kill. A 6-1 run by the Buckeyes culminated in a Cole Young kill and a 9-8 lead. A 3-1 run by the Trojans tied the set at 10-all. Kills by Samuel Clark and Jacob Pasteur put OSU up two at 12-10. The match was stopped briefly at 14-all after Pasteur took a shot to the nose off a USC attack. He remained in the game and put OSU up 17-16 with a kill. The teams then continued to trade points. With USC up 19-18, the Buckeyes called the first timeout of the set. The Buckeyes scored the next two and then with OSU leading 20-19, the Trojans called their first timeout. A pair of USC errors game the Buckeyes a 21-19 lead. Ohio State went up 22-19 after a 4-0 run. With Ohio State on a 6-0 run and leading 24-19, USC took its final timeout but a Trojan error gave the Buckeyes the 25-19 win. Ohio State hit .455 and ended the set on a 7-0 run. Pasteur and Clark each led with four kills. USC hit .156 in the opener.

Set 2
The teams traded points early until USC took a 5-3 lead after a 3-0 run. The lead jumped to 8-5 Trojans. Consecutive kills by Pasteur drew Ohio State to withing one at 9-8 USC. A 4-1 Trojan run put USC back in command at 13-9. After an Ohio State timeout, the Buckeyes went on a 3-0 run to make it 13-12 USC. Ohio State then tied it at 14-all on a Clark kill and Trojan error. USC responded with a 3-0 run to go back up 17-14. The Buckeyes then called their final timeout of the set and promptly scored the next two points to trail 17-16. USC then called a timeout of its own and scored the next two for a 19-16 lead. The Trojans finished the set on a 6-4 run to even the match at one set apiece with a 25-20 win. USC had the edge in hitting percentage in the second set .333 to .250. Clark led both teams with a match-high 10 kills with Pasteur adding eight.

Set 3
In similar fashion to set two, the teams traded points early but this time Ohio State took a 5-3 lead. The Buckeyes maintained the advantage until USC tied the set at 9-all and then took a 10-9 lead on a block. Ohio State kept it close before the Trojans used a 3-1 run to jump to a 15-12 lead. The Buckeyes then called timeout and scored the next three points to tie it at 15-all on a Jack Stevens ace. The Trojans then called a timeout but the Buckeyes took an 18-16 lead on two Shane Wetzel kills. A Justin Howard kill gave Ohio State a 19-16 lead after a 6-1 run. USC called another timeout before a Pasteur kill made it 20-16. USC could not get closer then two points the rest of the way in a 25-20 win for the Buckeyes. Pasteur continued to lead both teams in kills with 15 after three sets. Wetzel came off the bench to add six kills in the third.

Set 4
With the score tied at 3-all, the Buckeyes went on a 3-0 run for a 6-3 lead. Ohio State kept its lead at three following back-to-back Cole Young kills for an 8-5 lead. Another Young kill made to 10-6 Ohio State. USC came back to tie it at 11-all after a 5-1 run. The Buckeyes then called timeout and scored the next three to make it 14-11 Buckeyes. USC used a timeout but the Buckeyes kept the pressure on in taking a 16-12 lead in a Young kill. A Stevens ace made it 20-15 before Ohio State won the third set, 25-18 and the match 3-1.

The Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association season gets underway Thursday in Columbus when McKendree visits the Covelli Center for a 7 p.m. contest. The Buckeyes will remain home to face Lewis Feb. 11 for another 7 p.m. battle.
