
No. 10 Buckeyes Improve to 3-0 in MIVA With 3-1 Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 10 Ohio State (10-3, 3-0) fell behind 1-0 but won the last three sets to claim a 3-1 win at Purdue Fort Wayne (10-3, 1-2) at the Gates Sports Center Thursday.
Ohio State lost the first set 25-23 but rallied to win 25-16, 34-32, 25-19 to remain undefeated in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play at 3-0.
Jacob Pasteur led the Buckeyes with 19 kills and 10 digs. Samuel Clark added 14 kills and eight digs. Noah Platfoot led with 44 assists while adding three digs and five blocks.
How it Happened
Set 1
The Buckeyes and Mastodons went back-and-forth until the Buckeyes used a 5-1 run to take a 12-9 lead. Purdue Fort Wayne closed it to 12-11 before back-to-back errors put Ohio State back up 14-11. Again, the Mastodons cut it to one (14-13) before an error put the Buckeyes up 15-13 at the media timeout. Purdue Fort Wayne then took a 17-16 lead on a 4-1 run after the timeout. The Buckeyes called timeout and regained the lead at 18-17 on a Cole Young kill and Mastodon error. Neither team allowed separation until Purdue Fort Wayne took a 23-21 lead ahead of Ohio State’s second timeout. The Mastodons then finished off the set to win 25-23. Purdue Fort Wayne hit .379 while the Buckeyes connected at a .290 clip. Both Jacob Pasteur and Samuel Clark led with four kills.

Set 2
The Buckeyes took the first lead of more than one point after a kill by Jack Stevens and a Mastodon error made it 7-5 Buckeyes. After a 6-1 run, Ohio State built the advantage to 11-6, which led to a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout. Another run (4-1) gave the Buckeyes a 15-8 lead. Ohio State called timeout after a 5-2 run by the Mastodons made it 17-13 Buckeyes. Three Clark kills made it 20-14 Ohio State. Kills by Stevens and Pasteur and an ace by Stevens upped the Buckeyes lead to 23-15. After a Mastodon timeout, another Stevens ace and a Clark kill ended the set for a 25-16 win to even the match at one set each. The Buckeyes hit .455 in the second with Pasteur and Clark up to eight kills each.

Set 3
A 5-1 run early in the third put Ohio State in the lead at 6-3. After the Buckeyes went up 10-6, Purdue Fort Wayne used a 3-0 run to make it 10-9 Buckeyes. Ohio State scored the next two on Mastodon errors for a 12-9 advantage. A 3-0 Purdue Fort Wayne run tied it at 12-all. The Buckeyes called timeout and the teams began to trade points until a pair of Pasteur kills put Ohio State up 17-15. Justin Howard and Pasteur kills led to a Mastodon timeout with the Buckeyes leading 19-16. Ohio State then called timeout after consecutive Purdue Fort Wayne points made it 19-18. Behind a 5-0 run, the Mastodons took a 21-19 lead. Two errors by Purdue Fort Wayne tied it at 22-all. With the set in overtime and the score tied at 28-all, the Buckeyes took a 29-28 lead on a Mastodon error, leading to a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout. Tied at 32-all, Ohio State got the win 34-32 after a pair of Mastodon errors to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Both teams hit .333 in the third. Pasteur led with 17 kills while Clark upped his total to 11.

Set 4
Purdue Fort Wayne started strong to lead 8-4 before three Mastodon errors made it 8-7. After the lead increased to 11-7, Ohio State called timeout. Following a 4-1 run, Ohio State closed the gap to 14-13 Purdue Fort Wayne. A run of 3-1 by the Buckeyes tied it at 18-all. The Mastodons called timeout after a Clark kill put Ohio State up 20-19. Kills by Pasteur and Clark then made it 22-19 Buckeyes. Purdue Fort Wayne then took its final timeout. The Buckeyes then scored the next three points to win the set 25-19 and the match, 3-1. Ohio State scored the final seven points of the set.
