Buckeyes Close 2023 with 5-3 Win over Mercyhurst

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its final game of 2023, and first game after its December break, the Ohio State men's hockey team downed Mercyhurst, 5-3, Saturday in Value City Arena. The game wrapped up the season series between the Buckeyes (6-8-4) and Lakers (6-9-3); Ohio State posted a 4-3 road win in the season opener Oct. 7.

The teams were tied at two after the first period, with the Lakers coming from a goal down twice. Ohio State scored the next three goals, with two in the second, for a 5-2 lead. The Lakers drew within two with less than six minutes remaining but Ohio State closed out the victory. In all, 12 Buckeyes posted a point in the victory and Caden Brown had a team-best two with a goal and an assist.

How it Happened
- Freshman Max Montes scored his first collegiate goal at 5:20 to open the scoring, as he put in the rebound of a Dalton Messina shot from the side of the net. Rookie Nathan McBrayer had the second assist on the tally.
- Mercyhurst answered with a power play goal from Dustin Geregach at 10:35, scored just five seconds into the man advantage after a faceoff win.
- Caden Brown posted a power play goal for the Buckeyes to put Ohio State in the lead at 16:20, as he got to a loose puck in the crease. Michael Gildon and Davis Burnside picked up the helpers on Brown's third goal of the year.
- The Lakers again responded when Kyler Head scored off a faceoff win at 18:40.
- Ohio State carried play throughout the first period, outshooting the Lakers 22-8 in the stanza.
- The Buckeyes notched the only two goals of the middle period and again had the shot advantage, 13-6.
- Stephen Halliday broke the tie at 12:45 with a power play goal, converting a pass from Patrick Guzzo. Scooter Brickey also had a helper on the tally.
- A pass from Caden Brown across the crease hit Cam Thiesing and went in for a 4-2 Buckeye lead at 18:14. Theo Wallberg, who started the play up the ice, had the secondary helper.
- In the third, Jake Dunlap tallied unassisted, forcing a turnover in the neutral zone and scoring on the rush at 5:56.
- The Lakers made it a two-goal game at 14:39 when Keanan Stewart scored. Mercyhurst pulled its goalie with more than three minutes remaining but three saves from Buckeye goalie Kristoffer Eberly sealed the win.
- The Buckeyes ended the game ahead in shots, 43-26, and also hit the post three times.
- Eberly played all 60 minutes for the Buckeyes and had 23 saves. Ohio State blocked five Laker shot attempts. Owen Say had 38 saves in 56:34 for Mercyhurst, who blocked 20 Ohio State shot attempts.
- The Buckeyes were 2-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill in the win.
- With a goal and an assist, Brown had his fourth career two-point night and his third this season.
- Montes is the 17th Buckeye to score a goal this year.
- Halliday has a team-best 14 points. He, Burnside and Wallberg share the team assist lead with nine each. Halliday, Thiesing, Brickey and Guzzo each have a team-best five goals.
- Thiesing has a goal in three straight games and in five of the last seven outings.
- Burnside, who has already set a career best in assists, has a helper in five of the last seven games.
