Buckeyes Fall to No. 6/8 Badgers in Series Opener, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team lost game one of a series at No. 6/8 Wisconsin, 3-0, Friday in the Kohl Center. The Badgers scored midway through the first and did not relinquish the lead, adding two goals in the third, the final an empty net score, for the victory.

The Buckeyes (5-6-3, 0-6-1, 0-0-1 B1G) and Badgers (11-4-0, 5-2-0, 0-0-0 B1G) will wrap up the weekend series at 9 p.m. ET Saturday. The game will be streamed through Big Ten Plus and on Ohio State radio (1460 AM, Ohio State app, OhioStateBuckeyes.com).

"I thought we came out and played a pretty good first period on the road. You need to get the lead against a good team like that. Unfortunately, they got the first one and we weren't able to get one by him. We need to battle back and try to be a little bit better tomorrow."

The Short Story
Wisconsin opened the scoring, as Zach Schulz tallied at 9:13 of the first period after getting to a loose puck in the faceoff circle. Ohio State had the shot advantage in the first, 10-7, including eight of the first nine shots on goal. The Buckeyes had a power play chance just 13 seconds into the game.

Neither team found the back of the net in the second, with the Badgers outshooting the Buckeyes, 14-8. Eight of the Wisconsin shots in the period came during its three power play chances. Ohio State had one power play opportunity in the middle stanza.

In the third, Christian Fitzgerald doubled the UW lead at 13:47, scoring unassisted after picking off a Buckeye pass near the UW blueline and scoring on the rush from the faceoff circle. Ohio State pulled its goalie with more than three minutes remaining but was unable to get on the board and Cruz Lucius sealed the win with an empty net goal at 19:33.

Each team ended the game with 29 shots on goal. Wisconsin had 22 recorded shot blocks, Ohio State seven. Buckeye goalie Logan Terness made 27 saves in 57:14.

Ohio State was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill in the game. The Buckeyes had two power play chances.
