Buckeyes Drop Series Finale to No. 6/8 Badgers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team fell to No. 6/8 Wisconsin, 6-1, Saturday in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis., to close out a two-game Big Ten series. The Badgers tallied twice in the final three minutes of the first period and then outscored the Buckeyes 4-1 in the second period en route to the victory.

The Buckeyes (5-7-3, 0-7-1, 0-0-1 B1G) and Badgers (12-4-0, 6-2-0, 0-0-0 B1G) will meet in Columbus Feb. 16-17 to wrap up the regular season series between the teams.

A series at home vs. No. 8 Minnesota next weekend closes out the first part of the Buckeye schedule. The teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday and at 8 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. BTN will televise the matchups and the call will be on Ohio State Radio.

The Short Story
The Badgers scored twice in the final 2:37 of the first period, with a power play goal from David Silye and a shorthanded goal by Owen Lindmark, and led 2-0 through 20 minutes. The shorthanded goal was the first allowed by Ohio State this season. Wisconsin had the shot advantage, 13-7, in the first.

A Quinn Finley penalty shot goal at 3:18 after a Buckeye penalty on a breakaway and a Simon Tassy power play score at 6:45 pushed the Badger lead to 4-0. Ohio State got on the board at 8:11 with a power play goal. From right in front, Patrick Guzzo tipped in a pass from Davis Burnside, with Max Montes also assisting. The goal was Guzzo's fourth of the season and his third on the power play. Â

Wisconsin found the back of the net twice more before the end of the second, with a 4-on-4 score by Cruz Lucius at 10:17 and 5-on-5 tally from Jack Horbach at 12:40, for a 6-1 lead. The Badgers outshot the Buckeyes 14-5 in the middle period.

Neither team scored in the third period and each put 10 shots on net.

The Buckeyes were outshot in the game, 37-22. In the Ohio State goal, Logan Terness started and had 17 saves, allowing four goals, in 26:35. Reilly Herbst closed out the second period, giving up two goals on six shots while playing 13:09. Freshman Kristoffer Eberly made his collegiate debut in the third period and stopped all 10 shots he faced in 20:00.

Ohio State had 18 blocked shots, led by Scooter Brickey with four and Brent Johnson and Theo Wallberg with three each. Wisconsin had 13 shot blocks.
