Makenna Webster gets the game-winner early in the second overtime period
COLUMBUS, Ohio – If the first game of this year's Big Ten Tournament is any indication, field hockey fans are in for a treat. Makenna Webster scored early in the second overtime period to lift the fifth-seeded Buckeyes (14-5) to a 4-3 win over fourth-seeded Penn State (9-8) and set up a semifinal game tomorrow against top-seeded Northwestern.
The Short Story
Webster, who entered the tournament as the conference's third-leading scorer (41 points), scored twice in the game and punctuated was a back-and-forth contest that featured seven ties or lead changes. The Buckeyes fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 at halftime before grabbing a 3-2 lead early in the fourth quarter. Penn State tied it at 3-all with 8:10 remaining in regulation and the teams played a scoreless first overtime period before Webster's heroics in the 73rd minute.
Freshman Anne Marie Krebs was credited with an assist on the play, as her pass into the circle and front of PSU goalie Brie Barraco set up Webster's finish. Other Buckeyes goals on the day came from Julie Rodijk and freshman Brenna Bough.
How The Goals Were Scored
- After a scoreless first quarter, Penn State struck first on Carley Gannon's goal that was knocked in from out of the air at the 20:58 mark.
- Less than two minutes later, Rodijk found the back of the cage for the 10th time this season off a rebound in front of Barraco. That tie would hold up until late in the first half when Penn State grabbed a 2-1 lead thanks to a Sophia Gladieux goal off a penalty corner.
- Three minutes into the second half, Bough was in the right place at the right time to connect on a one-timer off an assist from Webster that tied the game at 2-2.
- The combo of Webster and Krebs would connect on each of the Buckeyes' final goals. At the 46:05 mark of the game – 1:05 into the fourth quarter – Ohio State grabbed a 3-2 lead. Penn State, however, tied the game at 3-3 on Allessie's penalty stroke goal.
