No. 13 Buckeyes Welcome No. 12 Spartans for B1G Matchup

- The No. 13-ranked Ohio State men's hockey team opens its slate of Big Ten home games this weekend with a two-game series vs. No. 12 Michigan State.Â
- The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena in Columbus. Both games will be streamed through Big Ten Plus and can be heard on Ohio State Radio and live statistics will be available.Â
- Game one is Greek Night and there will be an Ohio State Hockey flag giveaway for students. Saturday is the Buckeye Eras game and there will be a friendship bracelet making station outside of the Knucklebucks section. Script Ohio on Ice will be performed during the first intermission and there will be a postgame autograph session with select Buckeyes.
- Ohio State is 3-1-3 on the year and coming off a tie/shootout win and victory at Omaha last weekend. Michigan State is 5-3-0 and dropped two games at Boston College last time out.
- Ohio State and Michigan State split the season series last year, with both teams sweeping on their home ice.
- This weekend marks the Buckeyes' first Big Ten home games of the year. The squad was 0-1-1 at Michigan in its first league contests Oct. 20-21. This series starts B1G play for the Spartans. Â
- In the preseason USCHO.com poll, Ohio State was 13th, while the Buckeyes were No. 15 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live preseason rankings. The squad was No. 13 in both polls this week.Â
- Through seven games, 18 Buckeyes have gotten on the scoresheet, including 14 goal scorers.Â
- Eleven players returned from last year's Buckeye squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, was 21-16-3 on the year and advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals after finishing third in the regular season standings.
- Ohio State has added 15 newcomers to the roster for 2023-24. The group, with six forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies, includes eight freshmen and seven transfers (two graduate students). The new Buckeyes hail from 11 states in the US and two Canadian provinces, along with a native of Sweden.Â
- Goalie Logan Terness was named the Big Ten First Star of the Week after stopping 64-of-66 shots at Omaha last weekend.Â
- In the series, he had a .96 goals-against average and .970 save percentage.Â
- The junior made 34 saves in a 2-2 overtime tie in game one and did not allow a goal in the seven-round shootout. In game two, Terness posted his second career shutout and first as a Buckeye with 30 saves.Â
- Terness, who played the last two seasons at UConn, started the first seven games of the season for the Buckeyes. He has a 2.49 goals-against average and .919 save percentage, with a 3-1-3 record.Â
- Ohio State trails the all-time series with Michigan State, 56-94-13, but is 25-12-3 in Big Ten play vs. the Spartans.Â
- In Columbus, the Spartans have the lead in the series, 37-29-6. Last season, Ohio State posted 3-1 and 6-0 victories on its home ice Jan. 6-7. Â
- Patrick Guzzo leads Ohio State with 11 games played vs. Michigan State, while Matt Cassidy and Joe Dunlap have each skated in 10 contests vs. the Spartans. Dunlap has a team-best five goals vs. MSU and he and Cam Thiesing (8 gp, 4g, 2a) have six points each vs. the Spartans. Guzzo (2g, 3a) and Stephen Halliday (4 gp, 1g, 4a) have five points apiece vs. MSU.Â

- Ohio State is 4-for-30 (.133) on the power play this season. After starting the year with a power play goal in four of the first five games, the squad was 0-for-7 last weekend at Omaha.Â
- The Buckeye penalty kill, which led the NCAA a season ago, is 19-for-23 (.826) so far this year. At Omaha, the PK was 9-for-9.Â
- Five of the Buckeyes' first seven games this season were on the road. Including this weekend, three of the final five series in the first half of the year are at home.Â
- The Buckeyes have skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in each of their last three series. Ohio State and Michigan Tech are tied for the NCAA lead with three ties on the year. Â
- The Buckeyes are averaging 37.14 shots a night, giving up 31.71. The squad was second nationally in shots on goal a game (36.3) in 2022-23.
- Ohio State is averaging 2.71 goals per game on the year and has been held to two or fewer in four of the last five outings.
- Dalton Messina scored his second career goal, and first shorthanded tally, in game two at Omaha.Â
- Fourteen Buckeyes have scored a least one goal this season. Among the scorers are freshmen Theo Wallberg, Thomas Weis and Ryan Gordon, as well as sophomore John Larkin who notched his first collegiate tally at Omaha. Transfers Brent Johnson, Jake Dunlap, Mason Klee and Damien Carfagna have also all found the back of the net.Â
- Davis Burnside, who leads Ohio State with three goals, had his first career two-assist game last time out and totaled three assists at UNO.Â
- Stephen Halliday, the Buckeyes' leading scorer a season ago as a freshman, is first with six assists this year. He has a helper in five of seven outings.Â
- The squad's power play goals have come from four players - Wallberg, Brickey, Brent Johnson and Patrick Guzzo. Guzzo's power play score was the first of his career, to go with three shorthanded tallies. Wallberg has a team-best three power play points. Â
- Three Buckeyes have seen action in more than 100 collegiate games - Riley Hughes (122), Scooter Brickey (106) and Guzzo (104).Â
- Ohio State blocked a season-high 27 shots at Michigan Oct. 21. On the year, Wallberg and Brickey are first with nine, while Klee, Johnson and Carfagna each have eight. Guzzo and Cam Thiesing lead the forwards with seven.Â
- A road trip to Notre Dame Nov. 10-11 is up next for the Buckeyes before an open weekend.Â
- The squad will host Princeton for the first time Thanksgiving weekend. The Buckeyes' five-plus goals in their series vs. Lindenwood unlocked a $5 off deal for tickets to the series vs. the Tigers, which are available online.Â
