No. 16 Buckeyes Shut Out No. 20 Omaha, 4-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Backstopped by goalie Logan Terness, the No. 16 Ohio State men's hockey team shut out No. 20 Omaha, 4-0, Saturday in Baxter Arena. The Buckeyes led 2-0 after the first period and added two insurance goals in the third for the victory. Brent Johnson had a goal and an assist, while Stephen Halliday and Davis Burnside both had two helpers. John Larkin, Dalton Messina (shorthanded) and Damien Carfagna tallied for the Scarlet and Gray and Terness stopped all 30 shots he faced for his first shutout as a Buckeye.

The Buckeyes are now 3-1-3 on the year and the Mavericks are 2-1-1. The squads skated to a 2-2 overtime tie Friday in the series opener, with Ohio State winning the shootout.

Ohio State led 2-0 after the first 20 minutes. Right in front of the net, Damien Carfagna tipped a Davis Burnside pass from the right wing to put the Buckeyes on the board just 2:07 into the game. Stephen Halliday had the second assist on the tally, Carfagna's first as a Buckeye. An unassisted shorthanded goal from Dalton Messina, who won the battle along the boards and drove the net for a score, put Ohio State up 2-0 at 7:08.

The teams were then scoreless for more than 37 minutes. No goals were scored in the second period, with Ohio State outshot, 13-8. In the third, Brent Johnson gave the Buckeyes a three-goal cushion. Halliday led him into the lane and he made a nice move, scoring on a backhand at 5:13. John Larkin's first collegiate goal put the Buckeyes up 4-0 at 8:40. He threw the puck toward the net and it bounced off a Maverick and in. Jake Dunlap and Johnson had the assists on the tally. Ohio State limited UNO to just six shots in the third period, putting 13 on net.

- Terness' shutout was his first as a Buckeye and the second of his collegiate career. He shut out Ohio State while playing for UConn last October.
- In the series, Terness had a .96 goals-against average and .970 save percentage.
- Messina's shorthanded goal was the Buckeyes' first of the year. The squad led the NCAA with 10 shorthanded goals last year. It was his first goal of the season.
- Fourteen Buckeyes have scored a goal this season.
- Larkin's goal was the first collegiate tally and point for the sophomore.
- Carfagna's goal was his first point as a Buckeye.
- Johnson's goal and assist gave him his fourth career two-point game and his second this season.
- Burnside and Halliday lead the Buckeyes with seven points each. Halliday has a team-best six assists, followed by Burnside and Theo Wallberg with four each. Burnside has a team-best three goals.
- Burnside marked his first career two-assist game and his eighth career two-point outing.
- Halliday, who led Ohio State with 32 assists a season ago, had his fourth career two-assist night, his eighth career multiple-point outing and his 13th mutli-point game in the Scarlet and Gray.
- Ohio State and Omaha were conference foes for 11 seasons in the CCHA. This was the first series between the teams since November 2019 and the first matchup on Maverick home ice since November 2015.
- The Buckeyes will be back home next Friday and Saturday (Nov. 3-4) when they host No. 8 Michigan State, with puck drop at 7 and 5 p.m., respectively. Game one is Greek Night. Script Ohio on Ice will be performed during the first intermission of game two.
- A road trip to Notre Dame follows Nov. 10-11 before an open weekend.Â
