
Buckeyes Post Nine Top 4 Finishes, with Three Champions, at Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – At the Garret Penn State Open in University Park, Pa., Sunday, nine Buckeye men finished among the Top 4. Solin Li, Gabriel Feinberg and Luca Fioretto all won gold, Edriss Ndiaye and Miles Weiss posted runner-up finishes and Ilya Ayupov, Paul Veltrup, Kelly Liu and Nolan Williams all reached the semifinals to finish tied for third.

Men's Foil
Ohio State took five of the Top 7 places, including three of four semifinalists. Solin Li was the gold medalist, with Edriss Ndiaye picking up silver after Li won by one touch, 15-14, in the final. Li was the No. 4 seed and posted a 15-14 win in the Round of 16, a 15-9 victory in the quarterfinals and another 15-14 defeat in the semifinals.

Ndiaye was the No. 7 seed after pools. He advanced with a 15-10 win in both the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals and then defeated his teammate, Ilya Ayupov, 15-13, in the semifinals. Ayupov had 15-10 and 15-7 victories to reach the semis, ending tied for third.

Diego Cervantes was sixth, with a 15-14 win in the Round of 16 before falling to Ayupov, and Mitchell Huth placed seventh. The freshman won 15-7 in his first elimination bout and was then defeated by Li.

Gabriel Feinberg was the No. 1 seed after pools and ended as the champion. He opened elimination play with 15-10 and 15-12 victories before a 15-7 win over his teammate Paul Veltrup in the semifinals. In the final, Feinberg prevailed over Buckeye Miles Weiss, 15-10.

Weiss was the No. 2 seed and posted dominant 15-5 and 15-7 victories in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, respectively. In the semifinals Weiss advanced with a 15-11 win. Veltrup, the No. 5 seed, won 15-8 in the Round of 16 and then advanced with a one-touch victory, 15-14, in the quarterfinals.

Luca Fioretto was the No. 2 seed heading into elimination and came out with the gold medal. He posted a 15-6 win in the Round of 16 before back-to-back 15-7 victories, including over his teammate Kelly Liu in the semifinals. Fioretto defeated the No. 1 seed from Wagner in the championship bout.

Liu was the No. 14 seed and posted close 15-13 and 15-14 victories to reach the semifinals. The No. 5 seed, Nolan Williams won 15-8 in the Round of 16 and then posted a 15-13 win in the quarterfinals to advance. He dropped a 15-9 decision in the semifinals.

Aaron Buergenthal and Samuel Rightler finished seventh and eighth, respectively, after first-round wins. Buergenthal won his first bout 15-10 and Rightler won by one touch, 15-14, in his Round of 16 bout. Liu defeated Rightler and Fioretto topped Buergenthal in the quarterfinals.

- Ohio State will travel to Colorado for the Western Invitational hosted by Air Force Nov. 4-5.
