SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Grayhawk Golf Club showed its teeth on Friday in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Championship. The course played long, and the greens were firm. Ohio State played in the morning wave and opened with a round of 300, leaving them in a tie for 24th place in the 30-team field.
“We learned a lot about the golf course today,” said head coach Jay Moseley. “It’s obviously presented everybody with some challenge with the conditions and the way they’ve set this place up but just like we talked about last night, every hole out here is fair. There’s some that are certainly challenging. You don’t get very many birdie opportunities because it’s really challenging to get your approach shots close to some of these holes, But most every hole, if you if you hit some quality shots, you can walk out of there with pars and we just didn’t make enough good solid shots today.”
Sophomore Maxwell Moldovan led the Buckeyes on Friday with a round of 1-over 71. He played his first nine holes very solid, making one birdie and one bogey for an even-par 35. He then made back-to-back birdies at Nos. 4 and 5 to counter three bogeys and posted a closing nine 36.
Fellow sophomore Adam Wallin started slow but played his final 13 holes in just 1-over par to post an opening round 74. Jackson Chandler carded a round of 76 while Patrick Schmucking came in with a 79 and JonErik Alford an 80.
The Buckeyes will play in the afternoon wave on Saturday and they very well may see a different type of course.
“We’re going to prepare for a totally different golf course tomorrow because this course really changes from the morning to the afternoon when it dries out,” said Moseley. “It gets really firm and fast so our tee shots are probably going to go anywhere from 30 to 50 yards further, we’re probably going to have to hit some different clubs off the tee. The greens will certainly be firmer and faster as we go throughout the week, and we’ll be ready for that challenge.
Ohio State will start the second round at 3:25 p.m. ET off the first tee. After Sunday’s third round, the field will be cut to the Top 15 teams and after Monday’s fourth round, the Top 8 teams head to match to determine a champion.
