Buckeyes Host No. 8 Maryland Sunday in The Shoe

The Basics
- The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team will host No. 8-ranked Maryland at noon Sunday in Ohio Stadium. The game will be televised by BTN and on the Fox Sports app, with Dean Linke and Taylor Cummings on the call.
- Admission is free for all fans, with parking free in lots around the stadium.
- Ohio State enters the game 9-4 on the year and 2-1 in Big Ten play, with Maryland 11-1 and 3-0 in the B1G.
- The Buckeyes played at Michigan last Friday night, winning 9-7. Maryland defeated Princeton at home Wednesday, 19-9, and posted a 13-6 win at home over Penn State last weekend.
Thank You Seniors
- The eight members of the Buckeye women’s lacrosse Class of 2022 will be recognized pregame Sunday.
- The class includes Catie Beg, Sophie Baez, Ali Beekhuizen, Lindsay Epstein, Riley Ewing, Clare Johnston, Maura McGregor and Cai Martin.
- These Buckeyes have combined to already earn four bachelor’s degrees, nearly 30 Ohio State Scholar-Athlete accolades, 17 Academic All-Big Ten nods and seven Big Ten Distinguished Scholar awards. On the field, they have appeared in 350 games in the Scarlet and Gray, scoring more than 300 points and recording nearly 300 ground balls and 300 draw controls.
Buckeyes vs. Terps
- The Buckeyes are looking to end a six-game losing streak against Maryland, with the last victory an 11-10 win at Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.
- Last season, the teams met twice in College Park, with the Terps winning 14-9 March 18, 2021, and 11-5 March 20, 2021.
- Maryland is 3-0 in Big Ten play, with wins over Rutgers, Johns Hopkins and Penn State.
- The Terps are second nationally in scoring defense, allowing 7.46 goals per game, and are scoring 16.23 goals a game to rank ninth nationally. The squad is eighth in clearing percentage (.920) and second in saves percentage (.542).
Last Time Out
- The Buckeyes posted a 9-7 win at No. 14-ranked Michigan last Friday under the lights in Ann Arbor.
- Ohio State opened the scoring at 8:54 on a Lindsay Epstein goal before Chloe Johnson notched three straight for a 4-0 Ohio State lead after the opening 15 minutes. Goalie Regan Alexander made five stops for the Buckeyes in the first. Michigan scored the first two goals of the second but Jamie Level tallied late for a 5-2 Ohio State advantage at the half.
- Michigan scored three of the first four goals of the third quarter to draw within one (6-5) with 3:41 left in the third. Level notched back-to-back goals, at 1:30 of the third and 11:07 of the fourth, to regain a three-goal lead for Ohio State. The teams traded goals, with UM scoring at 8:56 and Nicole Ferrara tallying for the Buckeyes at 3:16, for a 9-6 game. The Wolverines drew within two one more time with 1:36 left but could get no closer.
- Chloe Johnson and Jamie Level each had a hat trick for the Buckeyes. Johnson had five draw controls, passing the century mark for draw controls this season and extending her program single-season record to 104. Sophie Baez had two assists and now has 100 career points in the Scarlet and Gray. Lindsay Epstein tallied twice, had four ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers in the victory.
Stats Stuff
- Ohio State is averaging 13.08 goals a game, allowing 10.69 per contest to rank 25th in the NCAA in scoring defense. The team is eighth nationally and leads the Big Ten in draw control percentage (.579) and is 18th in draw controls per game (16.00). Ohio State averages 32.69 shots per game to rank 22nd in the NCAA.
- The Buckeyes have the edge in ground balls, 220-190, and draw controls, 208-151, against their opponents this season.
- Jamie Lasda leads the Buckeyes with 32 goals and Nicole Ferrara has a team-best 17 assists. Ferrara is first with 40 points, followed by Lasda with 39, and is tied with Lindsay Epstein (who is third with 29 points) for second with 23 goals each. Sophie Baez is second in assists with 12.
- Chloë Johnson is eighth in the country and second in the Big Ten with 8.00 draw controls per game. She has 10 or more in five games this season, including 58 in the last seven games combined (8.29 per game).
- Johnson leads the Buckeyes with 104 draw controls. Jamie Level (42) and Epstein (37) each have more than 30 this season.
- Regan Alexander has started the last 12 games in the cage. She has 106 saves on the year, with a .465 save percentage.
- Epstein has a team-best 26 ground balls and Alexander is second with 24, followed by Jane Cowley with 22 and Caly O’Brien with 20. Epstein leads the squad with 17 caused turnovers. Cowley is second with 15 and O’Brien has 11.
Scoring Streaks
- Nicole Ferrara (18 games, 39g, 20a, 59p), Lindsay Epstein (9 games, 17g, 4a, 21p), Baez (7 games, 12g, 11a, 23p), Jamie Level (7 games, 15g, 4a, 19p) and Chloe Johnson (3 games, 9g, 9p) carry scoring streaks of at least three games into Sunday’s contest.
- Jamie Lasda had a 13-game streak end at Michigan, with 33 goals, seven assists and 40 points in the stretch.
Epstein the POTW
- Lindsay Epstein was a force throughout the game against the Wolverines last week to earn Big Ten Midfielder of the Week accolades.
- She had two goals, four ground balls, two draw controls and three caused turnovers as the Buckeyes posted a 9-7 victory, tying her career best for ground balls and .
- The graduate student has at least one goal in 12 of 13 games this season and multiple points in 11 outings. She has played and started 58 games as a Buckeye, with 62 goals, 18 assists and 80 points, along with 74 ground balls, 62 draw controls and 43 caused turnovers.
- Epstein has 37 draw controls on the year after 25 in her first 45 games in the Scarlet and Gray. The graduate student has also already set career highs in goals (23), points (29) and ground balls (26) this year, matching her personal best in assists (6).
Buckeye This and That
- Sophie Baez hit the 100-point mark for her career with two assists last Friday. She has 64 goals and 36 assists in 53 games as a Buckeye. She has 11 assists and 13 points in her last four games combined and has 12 assists this year, one shy of her career best.
- Nicole Ferrara has recorded three-plus points in nine of 13 games this year and has at least one point in all 13 outings. She has 92 points in 34 games as a Buckeye, with 61 goals and 31 assists.
- Chloë Johnson has posted three-straight hat tricks, against Penn State Louisville and Michigan. They were her first three-goal games since Feb. 15, 2020 at Stony Brook. She has a career best 18 goals, four assists and 22 points this year. She has 104 draw controls after 75 in her first 37 games in the Scarlet and Gray.
- Ava Keethler has started all 13 games on defense for the Buckeyes and has 13 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Cai Martin has 10 starts on defense and sophomore Sarah Johnson made her first three career starts in the last three games, while sophomore Erin O’Neil made her first career starts in the last two outings.
- Jamie Level is second on the squad with 47 draw controls, including seven at Colorado and five in three other games. She had her third game of the year with a hat trick or better at Michigan last week and now has an Ohio State career-best 19 goals this season, including seven multiple-goal outings, and a career-high 10 assists.
- Jamie Lasda was held off the scoresheet for the first time last week at Michigan. After recording two goals and five assists for seven points in nine games as a freshman last year, she has 32 goals, seven assists and 37 points this year in 13 games.
In the B1G
- Entering the weekend, Northwestern (4-0) and Maryland (3-0) occupy the Top 2 spots in the Big Ten standings. Ohio State follows at 2-1, with Rutgers 2-2, Michigan 1-3 and Johns Hopkins and Penn State both 0-3.
- The Top 4 teams will earn a spot in the Big Ten Tournament, set for May 6-8 at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, N.J.
