
No. 4 Ohio State Shuts Out Penn State, 7-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State women's tennis team opened Big Ten play with a 7-0 win at Penn State Friday in University Park, Pa. The win was the Buckeyes' fifth in a row and the team is now 7-3 on the year.
The Buckeyes swept doubles with three 6-4 wins vs. the Nittany Lions (4-5). In singles, Ohio State posted four three-set victories, a super tiebreaker win and a win by default for the 7-0 victory.
Quoting head coach Melissa Schaub
"Penn State is always a tough place to go on the road. We knew they had a good team and would compete hard. We were excited to get going in conference play so to get a start like that feels good."
In Doubles
- The Buckeyes won all three doubles match 6-4.
- On court one, No. 31-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff defeated Olivia Ryan and Yvonne Zuffova for the first victory.
- The duo of Kolie Allen and Isabelle Boulais was down early but rebounded to top Gabby O'Gorman and Sofiya Chekhlystova on court two and clinch the doubles point.
- The pair of Luna Dormet and Lucia Marzal beat Karly Friedland and Alexandra Nieslen to close out doubles.
In Singles
- Boulais, ranked 31st, dropped just two games in each set on court two against Zuffova for a 2-0 Buckeye lead.
- On court one, No. 6-ranked Cantos Siemers won the first set in a tiebreaker and then lost just one game in the second set, 7-6 (6), 6-1, against Chekhlystova.
- Allen clinched the Buckeye win, as she defeated Friedland, 7-6 (4), 6-4, on court four.
- On court three, No. 75 Ratliff dropped the first set 6-4. In the second, she came back from down 1-5 to take the set, 7-5, and force a super tiebreaker. The Buckeye prevailed, 10-8, for the match win.
- The Penn State facility has four courts, with Nos. 5 and 6 starting as courts cleared.
- Shelly Bereznyak lost the first set against Nielsen, but the Nittany Lion defaulted to give the Buckeye the match win on court five.
- Dormet closed out the day, as she defeated Danielle Alamo, 6-2, 6-4, on court six.
Up Next
- Ohio State returns to Columbus to host Xavier at 3 p.m. March 12. That match is the Buckeyes' lone home contest in March.
