COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State notched its fifth consecutive Top 6 finish as the Buckeyes carded a final round 5-under 279 and finished tied for sixth in a very strong field at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational.
The Buckeyes posted rounds of 276-285-279 to finish at 12-under par. That was their third consecutive tournament in red numbers. The Top 6 finish was even more impressive as it came against a field that featured four of the Top 10 and eight of the Top 26 teams in the country.
Sophomore Maxwell Moldovan led the way yet again as his final round 71 on Tuesday followed a pair of 69s on Monday to leave him in a tie for 14th at 4-under par. The Uniontown, Ohio native has posted seven consecutive rounds at par or better and five Top 20 finishes this season.
Adam Wallin also carded a final round 71 and finished a shot behind Moldovan at 3-under par. He has finished under-par in three consecutive events, marking the best stretch of his career.
JonErik Alford made six birdies in his team-best round of 4-under 67 on Tuesday. That was the lowest 18-hole score of his career and it matches his best score in relation to par. Alford led the team with 16 birdies and he played the par-5s this week at 8-under par which was third-best in the field.
Marco Steyn capped his event with a 1-under 70. After an opening birdie on Tuesday, he played the next six holes in 5-over par. But he rallied and made birdies and no bogeys the rest of the way. That was key as the team made its climb back up into the Top 5. Steyn finished the tournament at 3-over par and tied for 42nd.
Jackson Chandler was a shot behind at Steyn at 4-over for the tournament as he finished-up with a final round 71. He made five birdies in his round on Tuesday which was his most of any of the rounds this week.
As a team, the Buckeyes led the field in par-5 scoring at 4.55 and 27-under par. The Buckeyes also made 65 combined birdies which was third-most in the field.
The Buckeyes will look to remain hot as they travel from Florida to Tennessee this week to prepare for the Mason Rudolph Championship hosted by Vanderbilt at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club. The 54-hole event begins this Friday and runs through Sunday.
