COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team swept its series against Minnesota State with a 7-1 win over the Mavericks (12-15-1, 8-15-1 WCHA) on Saturday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. Highlighting the win for the Buckeyes (21-5-0, 17-5-0 WCHA) was Sophie Jaques setting an Ohio State record for points in a season by a defenseman with three assists for her team and 47 on the year.
How it Happened
Ohio State got the day started with two goals in the final four minutes of the opening frame. Lexi Templeman struck first for the Buckeyes at 16:07. She collected a rebound off an initial shot from Clair DeGeorge for the backdoor goal on the Mavericks. Jenna Buglioni scored with 27 seconds on the clock after tapping in a loose puck in front of the Minnesota cage. The Buckeyes went to the first intermission with a two-goal lead and a 15-7 shots on goal advantage.
The Buckeyes scored their third unanswered goal at 4:13 into the second thanks to Gabby Rosenthal. The senior made a stop on a Maverick transition at center ice with Liz Schepers taking possession of the puck. She sent it back to Rosenthal who struck from the slot to give Ohio State a three-goal lead.
Minnesota State managed to score at 5:34 in the second period, but that would be the only goal Ohio State was willing to give up in the game.
In typical fashion for the Buckeyes, the team came out of the second intermission hungry and scored four goals in the final stanza. Madison Bizal lit the lamp for Ohio State at 2:12 in the third period, sending the puck stick-side high to restore the Buckeyes’ three-goal lead over the Mavericks. Just over seven minutes into the period, Paetyn Levis took a shot that MSU’s Calla Frank initially saved. The puck got loose behind Frank and Liz Schepers fought to knock it back into the blue plaint. The puck was ultimately defected in for an Ohio State goal.
The final two Buckeye goals were scored on rebounded shots from Sophie Jaques. The first rebound at 15:43 was sent to Jenn Gardiner who fired it behind Frank on the right side. For her second goal of the day, Rosenthal recovered a Jaques rebound at 18:34 for an acrobatic, backhanded goal on the power play to push the Buckeyes up 7-1.
Amanda Thiele made her seventh consecutive start in goal for the Buckeyes this afternoon, stopping 18 shots for the Buckeyes. The win is her ninth of the season.
