Buckeyes Rally But Fall, 13-10, at Colorado

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Unbeaten Colorado (3-0) built an early lead and then withstood a furious comeback by Ohio State on its way to a 13-10 victory Sunday afternoon at Kittredge Field in Boulder, Colo. The loss drops the Buckeyes' record to 3-2 on the season.
Colorado led 9-3 at halftime only to see the Buckeyes score six times in the third quarter to get to within 11-9 heading into the fourth. The Buffaloes then held on in the fourth quarter for the win. Buffs' goalie Grace Donnelly starred for the home team with 13 saves. Ohio State was led by two goals apiece from Nicole Ferrara and Lindsay Epstein. Goalie Regan Alexander faced 22 shots and made nine saves.
The Short Story
Ohio State scored the first goal of the game, Nicole Ferrara's team-leading 10th of the season off an assist from Clare Johnston, but Colorado scored the next three to take a 3-1 lead. Johnston countered with her sixth goal of the young campaign to close the Buckeyes to within 3-2, but the Buffaloes scored the next three to lead, 6-2, after the first quarter. Sadie Grozier scored four times in the quarter for UC on her way to a six-goal game.
Colorado would go on to extend its run of goals to six consecutive with the first three goals of the second quarter to build a 9-2 lead. Lindsay Epstein scored her seventh goal of the season for the Buckeyes at the 2:27 mark to make it a 9-3 game at halftime.
Colorado extended to 10-3 early in the second half, but Ohio State went on a four-goal run with goals by Epstein, Caly O'Brien, Ali Beekhuizen and Ferrara to get to within 10-7 with just under seven minutes to play in the third quarter. Epstein had the assist on the Ferrara goal.
Following a Colorado goal, Ohio State scored twice more just before the end of the third quarter on goals by Sophie Baez and Jamie Lasda to cap a six-goal third quarter and make it, 11-9. Jamie Level assisted on Lasda's 10th goal of the season.
In the fourth quarter, Colorado scored at the 12:21 and 7:39 marks to build a four-goal lead and some breathing room at 13-9. Maura McGregor scored her second goal of the season for the Buckeye to get within 13-10 with 6:32 to play but that would end up being the final goal of the game.
Noting the Buckeyes
- Ohio State led in both shots (36-27) and shots on goal (23-22).
- The Buckeyes also led with 17 ground balls to 14 for the Buffaloes and had the edge in ground controls, 14-13.
- The Buckeyes were 12-of-13 on clears while Colorado was 18-of-20.
- This was the first meeting between Ohio State and Colorado.
- Third-year Ohio State head coach Amy Bokker is very familiar with the Buffalos, having played them 14 times from 2014-19 as head coach of the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford went 8-6 vs. Colorado under Bokker.
- Ohio State had scored 53 goals in its first three games and was No. 6 nationally with an average of just over 17 goals per game prior to these two games in Colorado, but the team managed only five vs. Denver before scoring 10 vs. Colorado.
