COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland used a late 11-2 run to pull away from No. 22 Ohio State down the stretch in a 75-60 victory Sunday evening in College Park.
The Buckeyes (18-8, 11-6) had four players finish in double figures led by Malaki Branham with 13 points. Cedric Russell made four of his five three-point attempts and finished with 12 points while E.J. Liddell and Jamari Wheeler each finished 11 points.
It was one of those nights as a number of Buckeye open looks just didn’t fall. That hampered the their ability to build any momentum and silence the home crowd. On the night, Ohio State shot 36.2 percent which was its second-worst shooting game of the season.
Maryland’s Fatts Russell connected on 6-of-10 from long range and finished with 27 points. He seemed to make the big shot all night when the Terrapins needed it.
The Buckeyes grabbed 12 offensive rebounds to 11 for Maryland but it was the Terrapins ability to capitalize on those second chances that was the difference. Maryland had 17 second chance points compared to just six for the Buckeyes.
Maryland burst out of the gate and scored the first eight points of the game. The Buckeyes responded with an 11-2 run and the rest of the first half was played fairly tight. Young had eight points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Russell and Wheeler kept the Buckeyes in the game in the second half as they combined to make four three-pointers. Russell’s first of the half cut the lead to one and his second closed the gap to 57-53 with 6:43 to play. But that was the last Buckeye field until the final minute when the game was decided. Maryland went on an 11-2 run to push the lead out to 18 points with just over a minute to play.
