COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State heads south again this weekend to San Marcos, Texas to take on the Bobcats of Texas State. The three-game set opens at 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.
This will be the first all-time meeting between the two programs. The weather will play a factor as it will be on the cool side for the first two games, with temperatures in the mid-40s. Sunday’s finale will be a little warmer as temps climb into the 60s.
The Opponent
- Texas State also opened the year 3-1 over the first weekend, taking 3-of-4 from Utah Valley at home in San Marcos.
- Four Bobcats hit over .400 on opening weekend, led by Dalton Shuffield who was 6-of-13 (.462) with a double, two home runs and five RBIs
- Wesley Faison had a team-high seven hits with two doubles
- On the mound, Zeke Wood struck out 12 in six innings while allowing just two runs in the opening day victory
- Texas State was 21-36 last season and 9-15 in the Sun Belt Conference
Ohio State Quick Hitters
- Ohio State opened the year 3-1 at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla., last weekend.
- The Buckeyes beat Marshall on opening day and then swept a pair from Indiana State, an NCAA tournament team a year ago, before dropping the finale to BYU.
- Sophomore Isaiah Coupet was filthy on opening day, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out 11. That was just the second start of his career.
- Senior Zach Dezenzo homered in his first at-bat of the season and hit .333 on the weekend with a pair of homers
- Marcus Ernst led the team with seven hits including a pair of triples. That was tied for the second-most in the country over the first weekend.
- Freshman Trey Lispey had a great Buckeye debut. He hit .417 on the weekend and slugged a grand slam in his first collegiate game.
- Transfer Drew Reckart also shined in his OSU debut, hitting a pair of home runs in the 15-4 opening day victory over Marshall.
- The 15 runs vs. Marshall on opening day were the most in a season-opener since the Buckeyes scored 20 runs in the 1975 opener
- Senior closer TJ Brock collected his first save of the season, getting six outs with three Ks in the 9-8 win on Sunday vs. Indiana State.
- The Buckeyes were losing 8-0 on Sunday vs. Indiana State and scored nine unanswered runs over the final five innings.
- Junior Nate Karaffa made his first two appearances on the mound for the Buckeyes last weekend and went 4.0 scoreless innings while only allowing two hits.
