
Ohio State Leads at 2022 Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A pair of championship, school-record swims sparked the Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team Friday evening at the Big Ten Championships, being held at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. Those efforts, plus additional points scored from 15 other Buckeyes, have positioned the Buckeyes in first-place heading into championship Saturday with 877 points. Michigan and Indiana are right there with the Buckeyes, with 810 and 782 points, good for second and third-place, respectively. Wisconsin is fourth with 681 points and Minnesota is fifth with 595.5.
Juniors Amy Fulmer and Hannah Bach each won Big Ten championships Friday. Fulmer swam to a school-record time of 1:43.73 to win the 200 freestyle. And in the very next race, Bach won the 100 breaststroke in a school-record time of 57.61.
Ohio State led the way with 11 individuals in championship finals, including diver Mackenzie Crawford on the three-meter springboard event. Two Buckeyes, junior Morgan Kraus and sophomore Tristan Harrison, scored points in two individual events apiece.
100 Butterfly
Four Buckeyes scored points in the 100 fly with Katherine Zenick (51.35), Tristan Harrison (52.41) and Morgan Kraus (52.76) all swimming to career best times in the championship final to finish 3rd, 6th and 8th, respectively. Catherine Russo started the evening off in fine fashion by winning the B final in 52.36. All four swimmers went under the NCAA B qualifying standard.
400 Individual Medley
Three more championship finalists, led by a runner-up finish from Kristen Romano in 4:05.28 and a third-place effort by Katie Trace in 4:06.79, helped the Buckeyes score 92 points in the event and retake the lead over Michigan, which led by 1.5 points after the first event of the evening. Kyra Sommerstad joined Romano and Trace in the championship final, finishing seventh in 4:12.27, and freshman Mia Rankin was 13th overall in 4:15.49. All times were NCAA B cuts.
200 Freestyle
Amy Fulmer, coming off a runner-up finish Thursday in the 50 freestyle, cruised to victory in the 200 freestyle, winning her first individual Big Ten title in a school-record and NCAA B standard time of 1:43.73. Freshman Teresa Ivan won the consolation final with a personal best and NCAA B standard swim of 1:46.03, and Maya Geringer also scored for Ohio State, finishing 21st in 1:47.61, more than two seconds faster than her previous best. Ohio State extends its championships lead to 30 points after this event.
100 Breaststroke
Hannah Bach wins her third Big Ten crown of 2022, and her sixth career crown, by winning the 100 breaststroke in a school record time of 57.61. She successfully defended her 2021 100 breaststroke title. Josie Panitz also raced in the championship final and finished fifth overall in a personal best time of 59.05. Bach hits the NCAA A qualifying standard and Panitz’s time was a B qualifying time.
100 Backstroke
Another big event for the Buckeyes as four swimmers score 67 points, led by Emily Crane’s fourth-place finish in 52.01. In addition, Paige Hall was 10th (52.93), Morgan Kraus was 13th (53.06) and Tristan Harrison was 15th (53.15) with all three swimmers establishing new personal bests while also hitting the NCAA B standard. Ohio State’s lead grows to 100 points.
Three-Meter Dive
Mackenzie Crawford qualified for the finals in the three-meter event and finished sixth with 339.10 points. Ciara McGing finished 20th with 276.20 points to also score team points for the Buckeyes.
200 Freestyle Relay
Ohio State won the first three relays of this championships, but couldn’t make it four-for-four, finishing second in the 200 free relay with an NCAA A qualifying standard time of 1:27.19, just .11 behind the school record. Competing for the Buckeyes: Zenick, Fulmer, Crane and Ivan.

Saturday’s competition includes the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly, platform diving and the 400 free relay. Preliminary heats begin at 11 a.m. ET and finals will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
