COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State opened the 2022 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday evening with its foot on the gas, winning both the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay. After the first day of competition from the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center in Madison, Wis., the Buckeyes take the lead with 128 points, 18 points ahead of second-place Michigan.
The two-time defending Big Ten champion Buckeyes set the tone right off the blocks, breaking four records in their first two races of the conference championship.
The 200 medley relay team of graduate Emily Crane, junior Hannah Bach, sophomore Katherine Zenick and freshman Teresa Ivan finished in a time of 1:33.64 to win the team’s first conference crown of the meet. In addition to racing an NCAA A cut, the Buckeyes set a pool record, Ohio State school record and Big Ten Championship meet record while racing to the best finish in the event this season in their first swim of the championships. The relay bested its previous record set at last year’s conference championship by .82 seconds. The Ohio State 200 medley relay has now won two conference titles in as many years.
The Buckeyes kept rolling in the second race of the evening, as the 800 freestyle relay team of junior Amy Fulmer, freshman Paige Hall and graduates Kristen Romano and Katie Trace out-touched Indiana by .43 seconds to win the event. Finishing in a school-record and NCAA A qualifying time of 6:58.17, Ohio State picked up its first win in the event since the 1991 Big Ten Championships.
Individual Ohio State swimmers powered to record finishes in their respective legs of the relays. Bach’s 25.51 split ranks second all-time in the 50 breaststroke and gives her the third-fastest split in the 200 medley relay behind Olympic champion Lily King. Fulmer also earned a school record in the 200 freestyle as she raced to a 1:43.36 finish in her lead off leg for the relay.
Tomorrow’s events include the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter dive and 400 medley relay. Prelims will start at 11 a.m. ET and finals will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
