
Ohio State Women Set for B1G Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team will battle to defend its Big Ten Conference championship title this week at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus. Starting on Wednesday, the Buckeyes look to win their third consecutive conference championship in as many years.
Schedule of Events
Competition is set to begin in Madison, Wis. at 6 p.m. ET Wednesday. For Thursday through Saturday, prelims will start at 11 a.m. ET and diving trials will start at 1 p.m. ET. Finals are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Buckeyes Win Two B1G Crowns in Two Years
- Ohio State enters the 2022 conference championship with a title to defend for the second consecutive year, having won the team championship in 2020 and 2021.
- Last season’s title is the Buckeyes’ seventh in program history and the first time the team has won consecutive championships since the 1985 and 1986 championships.
- After opening the meet tied with Michigan on Day 1, the team swam away with the lead for good on Day 2 and finished with a total of 1,584 points.
- Nine Buckeyes earned first-team All-Big Ten honors, including returners Emily Crane, Amy Fulmer, Hannah Bach, Katherine Zenick, Katie Trace, Kristen Romano and Sally Tafuto.
Returning Champions
- Of the nine student-athletes who won Big Ten titles in 2021 for the Buckeyes, eight will have the opportunity to defend their titles at this year’s championships
- Junior Hannah Bach and graduate student Emily Crane led Ohio State with three wins each last season. The duo was part of the 200 and 400 medley relay wins while Bach earned the 100 breaststroke crown and Crane helped the Ohio State 200 freestyle relay to its second straight B1G title and third in four years.
- Katherine Zenick and Kristen Romano also picked up two championships each last season with Zenick helping the Buckeye 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay to titles while Romano swept the individual medleys.
- Bach’s 58.29 finish in the 100 breaststroke from last year’s championships is the fifth-fastest time recorded in the event at the Big Ten championship meet. Romano also raced the No. 5 best time in the history of the conference championship in 2021, finishing her 200 IM race in a time of 1:54.19.
- Ciara McGing led the Ohio State divers at last year’s conference championships, earning a score of 307.00 on the platform dive to take bronze. Mackenzie Crawford also competed in the A finals in 2021, finishing sixth on the 1-meter board with a score of 305.25.
- Overall, Ohio State returned 19 point scorers from 2021 to the 2021-22 roster.
Buckeyes in the Big Ten This Year
- Ohio State is 3-0 against Big Ten teams this season, having raced against Indiana twice and Michigan once this year.
- Nine Buckeyes have recorded top-five times among women’s conference swimmers, including Katherine Zenick (50 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Amy Fulmer (100, 200 freestyle), Sally Tafuto (500 freestyle), Maya Geringer (1650 freestyle), Emily Crane (100 backstroke), Hannah Bach (100 breaststroke) and Katie Trace (400 IM). Tafuto’s season-best 4:40.49 in the 500 freestyle is the best time in the conference. Bach leads the way in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.08.
- Ciara McGing leads the Buckeyes on the platform dive with a fourth-place average among Big Ten divers. Mackenzie Crawford is sixth on the 1-meter dive and 13th on the 3-meter dive in the conference this season.
Ohio State Coaches
- Ohio State director of Swimming and Diving Bill Dorenkott is the reigning Big Ten Women’s Swim Coach of the Year. He earned the designation in 2020 and 2021 and is just the second Ohio State coach to receive the honor in the history of the championships.
- Dorenkott, who is in his 14th year at Ohio State and fifth as the director of men’s and women’s swimming and diving, is tied for second with five Big Ten championships as a coach. He has coached 56 individual Big Ten Champions.
- Buckeye head diving coach Justin Sochor leads the Buckeyes to the conference championship for the ninth year. He is a two-time Big Ten Men’s Diving Coach of the Year. On the women’s side, he guided Mackenzie Crawford to the 2020 1-meter title.
