
No. 10/11 Buckeyes Drop Opener to Spartans, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10/11 Ohio State men's hockey team lost to Michigan State, 4-2, Thursday in game one of a Big Ten series. The teams were tied at two late in the third, but the Spartans scored the go-ahead goal with less than four minutes remaining and added an empty net tally to close out the victory. Tyler Duke and Jake Wise tallied for the Buckeyes.
Both the Buckeyes and Spartans are now 7-3-1 on the year. Ohio State is 3-2-0-0-0-0 in B1G play, with Michigan State 3-1-1-0-0-1.
Quoting Head Coach Steve Rohlik
"I thought we played a good first period. Obviously the penalties toward the end of the first and in the second derailed our momentum. It was a pretty even game the rest of the way. We have to come back and be better tomorrow and try to get a split out of the series."
How it Happened
- The teams traded power play goals in the first period.
- Freshman Tyler Duke opened the scoring for the Buckeyes with his first collegiate goal. Tate Singleton corralled the puck near the faceoff circle and passed to Scooter Brickey, who set up Duke. His shot from the point got through at 14:39.
- Just over two minutes later the Spartans tied the game when Matt Basgall tallied through a screen at 16:50.
- Ohio State carried play through much of the first, outshooting the Spartans, 12-6.
- In the second, Karsen Dorwat scored at 6:01 to put Michigan State ahead.
- Buckeye Jake Wise deadlocked the game, tallying his fifth goal of the season. At the end of an MSU power play, Mason Lohrei broke up a play in the Buckeye defensive zone and he passed to Wise, who was behind the defense coming out of the penalty box. Wise converted the breakaway, scoring on a backhand at 14:12. Wise shares the team in goals and is first with 11 points, while Lohrei is tied for the team assist lead with seven.
- Ohio State faced five power plays from the 16:41 mark of the first through the second period. After allowing a goal on the only shot of the first chance, the Buckeyes limited the Spartans to just three shots on the other four opportunities combined.
- The Buckeyes had a power play chance 4:56 into the third and put three shots on net, but were unable to convert.
- The game remained tied until 16:24, when Daniel Russell scored off a loose puck for a 3-2 Spartan lead.
- Ohio State, which outshot the Spartans in the third 12-8, pulled its goalie with about two minutes remaining, but could not get the equalizer. Michigan State sealed the win with an empty net goal in the final minute.
- For the game, Ohio State had the edge in shots, 34-28. Buckeye goalie Jakub Dobes had 24 saves in 58:15 and MSU's Dylan St. Cry made 32 stops in all 60 minutes.
- Lohrei had three of the Buckeyes' 10 blocked shots, while Patrick Guzzo and Travis Treloar each had two. Michigan State had 17 recorded shot blocks.
- The Buckeyes were 1-for-3 on the power play and are now 10-for-46 (.217) on the year.
- On the penalty kill, the Buckeyes were 4-for-5. The squad is now 39-for-42 (.929) on the year
