No. 10/11 Buckeyes Fall to Spartans, 4-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10/11 Ohio State men's hockey team lost game two of a Big Ten series at Michigan State, 4-3, Friday in Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. The teams were tied at one less than seven minutes into the first period, but the Spartans scored back-to-back goals for a 3-1 lead after the opening stanza. Ohio State drew within one twice but was unable to get even.

The Buckeyes, now 7-4-1 on the year (3-3-0-0-0-0 B1G), will host Notre Dame in Value City Arena next weekend.
The teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday. Game one will feature Script Ohio on Ice after the first period and there will be a camo hat giveaway. For game two, fans are encouraged to wear scarlet. There will be a free postgame skate (fans must bring their own skates). Both nights are Military Appreciation games. Military members can receive two free tickets for each game online through Vet Tix or at the arena ticket window on game night.

"This was a tough weekend. The first two periods tonight weren't great and we put ourselves in a hole. The positive was how hard we battled in the third. That's the way we need to play for 60 minutes."
How it Happened
- Just 60 seconds into the game Michigan State opened the scoring with a Miroslav Mucha goal from right in front.
- The Buckeyes tied the game at 6:39, as a shot from Michael Gildon went off Joe Dunlap in front and in, with Jake Wise posting the second assist.
- Nicolas Muller answered less than a minute later for a 2-1 Spartan lead at 7:35.
- The Buckeyes killed a major power play that started at 8:05, with the penalty called after a challenge from Michigan State and video review.
- The Spartans converted their next power play chance, with Muller again scoring. The goal, with four seconds left in the period, gave MSU a 3-1 lead heading to the lockerroom.
- Michigan State outshot the Buckeyes, 18-7, in the opening 20 minutes, with 12 on the power play.
- Ohio State notched a power play goal of its own early in the second to make it a one-goal game. Travis Treloar one-timed a pass from Stephen Halliday in at 1:27, with Mason Lohrei posting the second assist.
- Michigan State again answered to go back ahead by two, with Tiernan Shoudy scoring at 8:44.
- Each team had 10 shots in the middle period.
- Davis Burnside made it a one-goal game at 6:29 of the third. Shortly after a Buckeye power play expired, Tate Singleton passed behind the Spartan net to Burnside in the faceoff circle and he scored, with Cam Thiesing also assisting on the goal.
- Ohio State pulled its goalie for the extra attacker with about two minutes left, but a penalty in the final minute gave the Spartans a late power play and they were able to close out the win.
- The Buckeyes put 19 shots on net in the third, limiting Michigan State to four.
- The game ended with Ohio State ahead in shots, 36-32. Jakub Dobes had 28 saves in 58:16 for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had 11 shot blocks vs. the Spartans, led by Scooter Bricked with three and Dominic Vidoli and Jaedon Leslie with two each.
- Ohio State was 1-for-3 on the power play and is now 11-for-49 (.224) this season.
- On the penalty kill, the Buckeyes stopped 3-of-4 chances. The squad is now 42-for-46 (.913) on the year.
- Wise leads the Buckeyes with 12 points, while Halliday and Lohrei share the assist lead with eight each. Halliday is second with 11 points and Travis Treloar is third in points with 10 (5g, 5a). Wise, Treloar, Sadlocha and Burnside each have five goals to lead the Buckeyes.
