
Buckeyes Prevail in Five Over No. 13 Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes (8-5, 4-1 B1G) beat No. 13 Penn State (13-3, 2-3 B1G) in a dramatic five-setter (25-17, 25-15, 25-27, 22-25, 15-11) on Friday evening in front of a sold-out Covelli crowd. This was Ohio State’s first home conference match of the season.
The Buckeyes scored the first three points of the match and didn’t look back in the first set as the OSU offense hit .531 in a 25-17 set win. Penn State kept the second set close early with Ohio State leading 12-9 before the Buckeyes ended the set with a 25-15 victory. The Nittany Lions came on strong late in the third set to force a fourth with a 27-25 set win. Ohio State held off a pair of Penn State pushes in the fifth set to win 15-11 and take the match.
How it Happened
Gabby Gonzales began the match with a kill as Ohio State scored the first three points, all kills. The Buckeye defense did not allow more than two-consecutive PSU points as OSU led 15-8 at the media timeout on the back of a 6-2 run. The teams traded points out of the timeout until a 3-0 Buckeye run extended the lead to 21-13. Ohio State closed out the first set on back-to-back Penn State attack errors, winning the first set by a 25-17 margin.
The Buckeyes scored the first three points of the second set as well, including the first block of the match by either team. The Nittany Lions tied the set at three before a 5-0 OSU run forced a PSU timeout with the Buckeyes in front by an 8-3 mark. Penn State got within three out of the timeout before Ohio State put together a 7-2 run to increase the lead to 19-11. The Buckeyes earned the 25-15 set win on a kill from Emily Londot.
Adria Powell started the third set with a kill and the Buckeyes scored the first two points of the set. A 4-0 OSU run helped the Buckeyes take an early 7-2 lead. Ohio State extended its lead to 12-5 before Penn State responded with a 4-1 run to trim the lead to 13-9. The Buckeyes held the 15-9 advantage at the media timeout. The Nittany Lions used a 3-0 run to cut the Ohio State lead to 19-17 and force an OSU timeout. Penn State tied the set at 21, the first tie since 3-3 of the second set. Ohio State scored back-to-back points to force a PSU timeout. Penn State scored the next three points to take a 24-23 lead, its first of the match. OSU fought off two set points before PSU won by a 27-25 margin to force a fourth set.
Ohio State again scored the first two points of the set, this time beginning with a block from Powell and Londot. Penn State tied the set at two, but OSU responded with the next three points. PSU trailed until taking the lead back with a 4-0 run at 8-7. The Buckeyes tied the set at eight and again at nine and 10, but a 3-0 PSU run gave the Nittany Lions the advantage again. Penn State held the 15-12 lead at the media timeout. OSU tied the set at 15 out of the media timeout and then took the lead back with a 3-0 at 18-17, forcing a Penn State timeout. Each team took another lead with back-to-back points following the timeout as the set was tied at 18, 20, 21 and 22. The Nittany Lions scored the next two points to force a Buckeye timeout. Penn State forced a fifth set with a 25-22 set win.
Penn State scored the first two points in the fifth set, but Ohio State responded with the next two. Each team had a one-point lead to follow, but the Buckeyes’ 4-3 advantage would not be relinquished. PSU got within one at 8-7 before four-unanswered OSU points brought the lead to 12-7. Penn State again answered with a run to get within one at 12-11, but the Buckeyes finished the match with the next three points to earn a 15-11 set win.

Match Notes
- This is the Buckeyes’ fourth ranked win of the season, previously beating then No. 3 Louisville, No. 10 BYU and No. 5 Georgia Tech.
- Ohio State tied its season-high 10 blocks.
- This is the fourth time this season that Ohio State has hit at least .300 as a team.
- Kylie Murr moved into second in program history in career digs as she now totals 1,589 digs as a Buckeye.
- Mac Podraza moved into sixth in program history in career assists, surpassing the total of Jen Flynn Oldenburg, as she now has 3,217 career assists. Podraza had a season-high 60 assists and added 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.
- Jenaisya Moore surpassed the 20-kill plateau for the second time this season, finishing with a season-high 21 kill. Moore recorded her 600th career kill.
- Jenaisya Moore and Gabby Gonzales each recorded at least 10 kills for the eighth time this season.
- Murr recorded at least 10 digs for the 12th time this season, finishing the match with 20 digs.
- Gonzales recorded her fourth double-double (third-consecutive) with 21 kills and 13 digs.
- Emily Londot totaled double-figure kills for the 12th time this season, finishing with 12 kills.
- Londot also recorded her 500th career dig.
- This is the seventh time this season that Gonzales has had two service aces. She finished with a season-high three aces.
- This is Murr’s second match this season with two service aces.
- Set one: The Buckeyes hit .531 in the set and did not trail.
- Set two: Ohio State hit .407 in the set and did not trail. The Buckeye defense forced the Nittany Lions to hit just .120 in the set.
- Set three: Penn State took its first lead of the match at 24-23 despite Ohio State hitting .438 in the set.
- Set four: The set featured 12 ties and five lead changes, something not seen as frequently in the previous sets.
- Set five: Ohio State took a 4-3 lead that would not be relinquished.
