COLUMBUS, Ohio – The highly anticipated 2022 national championship game rematch between the No. 1/1 Ohio State women’s hockey team and No. 4/5 Minnesota Duluth was nothing short of exciting. With just 59 seconds left on the clock in overtime at the OSU Ice Rink, junior forward Jenna Buglioni scored her second goal of the game to give the Buckeyes (7-0-0, 7-0-0 WCHA) a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs (6-1-0, 2-1-0 WCHA).
How it Happened
As the clock was approaching one minute to play in overtime, Buglioni recovered the puck at center ice and found herself one-on-one with Minnesota Duluth goaltender Emma Soderberg. The Port Moody, B.C. native took a shot and finished glove-side on Soderberg to secure the win for Ohio State. To make it even sweeter, Buglioni was met with cheers from Buckeye alumnae on the other side of the glass as her teammates cleared the bench to celebrate the victory.
After a scoreless first period, it was Buglioni who tallied the first goal of the game at 1:29 into the second frame. Ohio State started the period on the power play as a result of a body checking penalty on Minnesota Duluth with just 13 seconds left to play in the first. Taking a faceoff in the UMD zone, Buglioni knocked the puck out to freshman defenseman Sloane Matthews who then passed to fellow defenseman Riley Brengman. Brengman sent a shot towards the Bulldogs’ goal and Buglioni redirected it into the back of the net.
Minnesota Duluth tied it up at one with a goal by Clara Van Wieren at 13:55 in the second period, but Ohio State was quick to respond.
With under three minutes to play in the second period, Gabby Rosenthal did what Gabby Rosenthal does best and won a faceoff in the Bulldogs’ zone. She knocked the puck out to Jenn Gardiner, who one-timed a shot from just outside the circle and buried it past Soderberg to put Ohio State back in the lead with 2:44 to play.
Buglioni found herself in scoring position again with under 50 seconds to play in the second. A rebounded shot by Brengman popped up in front of a pile of players in the Minnesota Duluth goalie crease. Buglioni batted the puck down and into the goal, but it was called back for a high stick and the score remained 2-1 in favor of the Buckeyes.
The lone goal of the third period came from the Bulldogs’ Maggie Flaherty at 7:56, which would ultimately send the game to overtime.
