The match against Texas Tech will be streamed on ESPN+.
Last weekend, Ohio State opened the season with two wins at the Sports Imports Classic at Nationwide Arena. The Buckeyes began the weekend by cruising to a win in straight sets against Northern Kentucky (25-10, 25-18, 25-14) before beating No. 4 Washington in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18).
- OSU moved up five spots to be ranked No. 6 in the weekly AVCA poll on Monday after sitting at No. 11 during the preseason. This is the Buckeyes’ highest ranking in six seasons as they were most recently ranked sixth on Oct. 12, 2015.
- The Buckeyes became the first team of the 2021 season to topple a top-five team.
- Freshman middle blocker Arica Davis was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Monday after setting the single-match program record for block assists (12) and tying the single-match program record for total blocks (13) in her collegiate debut against Northern Kentucky.
- Ohio State has won each of the three previous meetings with Rhode Island, including two neutral-site matchups, though the two programs have not played since the 1993 season.
- OSU and Texas State have played only once previously, with the Buckeyes winning in straight sets in 2016 at the North Texas Challenge.
- The Buckeyes hold a 3-2 advantage in the all-time series against Texas Tech, though the Red Raiders won the most recent meeting in 2019 – a five-setter at the Sports Imports Classic.
- Rhody began the season with two wins (Quinnipiac, Holy Cross), followed by two losses (Bryant, Providence), to enter the tournament an even 2-2. During the shortened spring season, Rhode Island finished 7-8 overall and 6-3 in league play, falling to VCU in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinal match.
- The Bobcats opened the season at the Dayton Invitational last weekend, dropping matches to No. 3 Kentucky, Cincinnati and Dayton. Last year, Texas State finished with a 31-9 overall record and a 15-1 record in conference play. The Bobcats won the conference tournament and the opening match in the NCAA Tournament before falling to No. 5 Nebraska in straight sets to end the season.
- The Red Raiders opened the season 3-1, with their only loss coming to Tennessee (RV). TTU has earned wins against East Tennessee State, NC State and Abilene Christian. Last year, Texas Tech finished 9-13 overall and 5-11 in Big 12 play with conference matches taking place in the fall and non-conference in the spring.
