
Buckeyes Move Up Five Spots in AVCA Rankings

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) released its weekly rankings on Monday. The Buckeyes were ranked sixth after being ranked 11th in the preseason rankings. View full rankings HERE.
Ohio State (2-0) moved up five spots following opening-weekend action at Nationwide Arena. The Buckeyes cruised to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-14) win against Northern Kentucky on Friday. OSU took control of the first set but would face a back-and-forth start to set two before a 6-0 run sealed the victory. The Buckeyes dominated set three to close the match as freshman Arica Davis set the single-match program record for block assists (12) and tied the single-match program record for total blocks (13). The Buckeyes beat a then-ranked fourth Washington team in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18) on Saturday to wrap up play at the Sports Imports Classic. Each team went on a run at some point during the first set as the two were tied at 23 before the Huskies captured the final two points. OSU used six-consecutive points in the second set to take a lead it would not relinquish. The Buckeyes saw their lead in set three trimmed down to one point before scoring back-to-back points to claim the 2-1 set lead. Last season, Ohio State topped out at No. 8 on April 5 and spent the final five polls in the top 10. This is the Buckeyes’ highest ranking in six seasons as the most recent time the Buckeyes were ranked sixth was on October 12, 2015.
