Buckeyes Garner Big Ten Accolades

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Melissa Schaub has been voted the Big Ten Coach of the Year and sophomore Irina Cantos Siemers and junior Isabelle Boulais were both named to the All-Big Ten Team, the conference announced Monday. Cantos Siemers also was recognized with a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The conference awards are voted on by the league’s coaches.
The Buckeyes, 21-3 overall and 15-1 in B1G play, were the 2021 Big Ten regular season co-champion and won the league’s tournament title Sunday. Ohio State earned the Big Ten’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament; the bracket will be announced at 6 p.m. tonight on NCAA.com.
Schaub is now a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year; she was also recognized in 2015, ’16 and ’17. This is the seventh straight year she has led the Buckeyes to an NCAA Tournament berth. Schaub, in her ninth year at the helm of the Buckeyes, has a career record of 175-58 and a B1G only ledger of 75-20. The 2021 Buckeyes enter the NCAA Tournament on a 12-match winning streak after defeating Michigan State, Iowa and Michigan for the B1G Tournament title over the weekend.
Cantos Siemers, from Barcelona, Spain, is currently ranked 15th, the highest ranking among Big Ten players. She is 18-5 overall in 2021, with a 15-5 dual match record, and was 12-3 in Big Ten play. Cantos Siemers is 10-5 on court one and 5-0 on court two. In doubles she is 15-5 overall and 15-2 in dual matches, including a 12-0 mark in dual play (10-0 in B1G action) with Luna Dormet. The duo of Cantos Siemers and Dormet is currently No. 85 in the ITA rankings.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Boulais was also an All-Big Ten selection in 2019 when she was the B1G Freshman of the Year. She is 11-5 overall and in dual play this season, with a 3-1 mark on court one, 6-3 record on court two and 2-1 ledger on court three. She clinched the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Tournament semifinal win vs. Iowa Saturday with a three-set victory. In doubles Boulais is 15-2 overall and in dual matches. She and Kolie Allen are ranked 50th and have a 14-2 record in dual play, all on court one. The tandem was 10-1 in B1G regular season matches.
