B1G Tourney Champs! Ohio State Tops Michigan 4-1 for Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's tennis team claimed the 2021 Big Ten Tournament title, as the top-seeded Buckeyes defeated No. 2 seed Michigan, 4-1, in the championship match Sunday in Madison, Wis. The tournament title is the third in program history, all under current head coach Melissa Schaub. Ohio State, the Big Ten regular season co-champion this year, also won the 2016 and '17 league tournament crowns.
The Buckeyes improves to 21-3 overall with their 13th win in a row and the tournament title gives Ohio State the Big Ten's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. The selection show will air live on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. Monday. Ohio State will be making a seventh straight trip to the NCAA tournament.

After capturing the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, Ohio State jumped to a 3-0 advantage with straight-set singles wins from Lucia Marzal and Luna Dormet. A Wolverine singles win made the score 3-1, with the final three matches going to a third set. Buckeye Lisa Hofbauer provided the clinching point, as she rallied from a set down to win her match.
Hofbauer was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined by Dormet on the all-tournament team.

In Doubles
- The Buckeyes won the doubles point for the 19th match in a row, with court two and three victories.
- On court three, No. 85-ranked Luna Dormet and Irina Cantos Siemers won the final three games against Bella Lorenzini and Andrea Cerdan for a 6-3 victory. The Buckeye tandem improved to 12-0 this spring.
- The court two tandem of Lucia Marzal and Lisa Hofbauer was up 3-0 early before Michigan's Chiara Lommer and Kari Miller broke to get back on serve. Ohio State answered with a break of its own for a 4-2 advantage. Michigan broke once more, but Ohio State won the final two games to take the match 6-3. Marzal and Hofbauer are 12-2 as a tandem.
- On court one, No. 50-ranked Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen led Alyvia Jones and Jaedan Brown 5-4 when the doubles point was clinched.
In Singles
- For the second match in a row Dormet and Marzal were first off the court, staking the Buckeyes to a 3-0 lead.
- On court four, Marzal won the first set, 6-3, against Cerdan, breaking for the set. In the second set Marzal and Cerdan were tied at 4-all before Marzal held for a 5-4 lead and broke for the match to put Ohio State ahead 2-0.
- Dormet, against Jones on court five, won the final three games of the first set for a 6-3 advantage. In the second, the Buckeye again won the last three, holding to take the win and put Ohio State one point from the championship.
- Michigan got on the board when Lorenzini defeated Buckeye freshman Madeline Atway, 7-6, 6-2, on court six.
- The final three matches all went to a third set.
- On court three, Hofbauer faced Brown. In the first set, Hofbauer came back from down 5-3 to force a tiebreaker, but the Wolverine prevailed, 7-3, to take a one-set lead. The Buckeye rolled in the second set, winning 6-2. In the third, Hofbauer and Brown traded early breaks before Hofbauer won four games in a row for a 5-1 advantage. Brown held for a 5-2 set, but Hofbauer held to clinch her match and the championship.
- On court one, Cantos Siemers, ranked 15th, dropped the first set vs. No. 50 Miller, 7-5. In the second, Cantos came back from down 1-4 to take a 5-4 leads. The players exchanged three straight breaks, with Miller breaking with Cantos serving 6-5, sending the match to a tiebreaker. In the breaker, the Buckeye prevailed, 7-2, to force a third set. Cantos Siemers and Miller were on serve at 2-all when the match was clinched.
- On court two, Boulais took a 4-1 lead and captured the first set, 6-3, against Lommer. In the second, the Wolverine won the final four games to force a third set. The match was abandoned with the score 4-all.
- Marzal is a team-best 22-3 overall this year and is 20-2 in dual matches, with wins in her last six. Dormet, on an 11-match winning streak, is 18-1 in dual play and 20-1 overall. Hofbauer moved her record to 13-6 in dual matches and 14-8 on the year.
