CARMEL, Ind. – On a tough day for scoring, Ohio State sits in a tie for fifth after the first round of the Big Ten Championship at Crooked Stick.
The wind made scoring almost impossible down the stretch. Sustained winds in the mid-20s with gusts into the 40s. Just one player in the 70-player field broke par on the day and the scoring average was nearly 79.
Freshman Maxwell Moldovan didn’t have any trouble early. He started his first Big Ten Championship by holing out for eagle on the par-4 first hole and then birdied the second. He battled the rest of the way to post a 2-over 74 and is currently tied for seventh.
Felix Kvarnstrom opened with a 5-over 77. He made a team-high 13 pars which was third-most of anyone on the day. Jackson Chandler and Elis Svard both carded rounds of 7-over 79 and freshman Adam Wallin was a shot behind those two with an opening 80.
The Buckeyes will be off at 9 a.m. Saturday morning and are paired with Rutgers and Northwestern.
