COLUMBUS, Ohio – A strong field will assemble in Arizona this weekend for the 48th playing of the ASU Thunderbird Invitational at historic Papago Golf Club in Phoenix. The tournament will also give some of the country’s top teams a glimpse of desert golf ahead of next month’s NCAA Championship at nearby Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.
- Ohio State’s lineup will consist of the same five as the previous two events in Maxwell Moldovan, Felix Kvarnstrom, Adam Wallin, Elis Svard and Jackson Chandler. Grant Engle will also compete this weekend as an individual.
- The 16-team field consists of five teams in the Top 25 of the latest Golfweek rankings. Ohio State is one of nine teams ranked in the Top 50 and all 16 teams are within the Top 100.
- The Buckeyes shook off the rust of a three-week lay-off last weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational. Wet and breezy conditions didn’t make scoring easy for any team.
- After this weekend, the Buckeyes will host the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate next week before heading to Crooked Stick for the Big Ten Championship in two weeks.
- Freshman Maxwell Moldovan has had a tremendous start to his collegiate career. He has finished in the Top 6 in three of his four events and all but two of his rounds have been at par or better. Moldovan leads the team in scoring 70.33 and has six rounds in the 60s.
- Felix Kvarnstrom has been in the Top 25 in three of the four events and is second on the team with a 72.00 scoring average. He tops the team with 43 birdies made in 12 rounds this season.
- The Buckeyes have finished under-par in three of the four events this season.
- The weather forecast looks ideal with temperatures expected in the mid-80s with no chance of rain.
