COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams wrapped up the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships on a most positive note as seven individuals earned All-America honors and the women’s team was the highest placing Big Ten team in the final standings as they finished in a tie for 11th overall.
After Adelaide Aquilla, the junior from Rocky River, Ohio, started things off Friday by winning the national championship in the shot put with a school-record heave of 18.12m/59-5-1/2, Saturday saw two more top five finishes from Buckeyes and a valiant ninth-place finish by sophomore triple jumper Clarence Foote-Talley, the highest placing Buckeye from the men’s team with a ninth-place effort of 16.18m / 53-1. Foote-Talley, from Germantown, Md., qualified for the triple jump finals but had to pull out because of an injury.
Senior Anavia Battle and sophomore Allie Guagenti each placed fifth in their respective specialties. Battle ran a season’s best 22.76 time in the 200 meters and Guagenti ran a personal best for the second consecutive day in the mile with a time of 4:36.71.
This “A-Team” of Adelaide, Anavia and Allie were each honored as first-team NCAA All-Americans for their efforts and their combined total of 18 points nearly had the Buckeyes in the national Top 10 for a second consecutive championships. The team was fourth in 2019, the last NCAA indoor championship meet.
