COLUMBUS, Ohio – What a time to be a Buckeye! After moving into first place in the conference standings with an 11-0 record, three members of the Ohio State women’s volleyball team swept the Big Ten weekly honors, the league announced Monday.
Emily Londot pulled double duty as player and co-freshman of the week. Rylee Rader also picked up a pair, being named defensive player and co-freshman of the week. Mac Podraza was tabbed as setter of the week.
The last team to sweep the Big Ten’s weekly awards was Illinois on Nov. 24, 2008. However, the conference only recognized player and defensive player at the time. The Big Ten added freshman honors in 2009 and setter in 2012. With that in mind, Ohio State is the first team to sweep the weekly accolades since the Big Ten began awarding all four honors in 2012.
Londot averaged 4.50 kills per set while hitting .338 in Ohio State’s two victories at Rutgers. She had a season-high .448 attacking clip and 16 kills in Friday’s meeting. She followed up that performance with 20 kills, nine digs and five blocks on Saturday. The Utica, Ohio, native has registered double figures in kills in every match this season and has tallied at least 20 kills on three occasions.
Rader had a stellar .579 attacking percentage during the series with just one error (23-1-38). She also averaged 2.88 kills and 1.75 blocks. Rader hit a season-best .667 and posted 10 kills with no errors on 15 attempts Friday. She was a defensive powerhouse on Saturday with a career-high 11 blocks, the most by a Buckeye since 2015 and by a freshman since 1987. The Louisville, Ky., native also added a career-best 13 kills on 23 swings with one miscue to hit .522. Her performance on Saturday marked the first double-double of her career.
Podraza averaged 11.75 assists and totaled 94 helpers against Rutgers to pick up her second straight setter of the week laurel. She accumulated 43 assists, seven digs, four kills and three rejections on Friday. The sophomore distributed 51 assists for a third time this season and served a career-high four aces on Saturday. She also had six digs, four blocks and five kills on 11 error-free swings for a .455 clip.
The Buckeyes are off to their best start in the Big Ten since 1991 and have the most consecutive wins since 2013. Jen Flynn Oldenburg has already made her mark as it also happens to be the best start under a first-year head coach in program history.
