COLUMBUS, Ohio – After 479 days without competition, the Ohio State women's soccer team (0-0-1, 0-0-1 B1G) opened the season against Michigan (0-0-1, 0-0-1 B1G) and battled to a 1-all tie in double overtime Saturday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Indoor Field.
The game was played indoors because of inclement weather in the Columbus area.
Lori Walker-Hock, now in her 24th season as head coach of the Buckeyes, said she was ready for a physical battle after such a long delay between games.
"It's amazing to be back playing," Walker-Hock said. "I think both teams really left a lot out on the field. There was a lot of physical soccer, which you would anticipate when the players are anxious and ready to play. I saw a lot of character on our team having to play overtime right out of the gate. I like where our fitness is and there is a lot we can move forward with and build on."
Michigan got on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 30th minute by Sammi Woods.
The Buckeyes tied the game in the 68th minute on a goal by Emma Sears, her first as a Buckeye in 18 career games. Kayla Fischer set up the score for her seventh career assist in 34 career games.
The Buckeyes outshot the Wolverines 22-13. Ohio State keeper Bailey Kolinski saved seven of eight Michigan shots on goal. Wolverines keeper Hillary Beall stopped 15-of-16 Buckeye attempts on the frame.
Ohio State returns to action at 2 p.m. Thursday in Columbus at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center Indoor Field.
