
Buckeyes Battle Back to Upset No. 8 Nittany Lions

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team erased a 2-0 deficit to clinch a hard-fought 3-2 win (17-25, 13-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-8) over No. 8 Penn State on Wednesday at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes remain undefeated on the season with a 7-0 record while the Nittany Lions drop to 2-3.
Tonight’s win is Ohio State’s first victory against a ranked opponent this season and under first-year head coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg.
The Buckeyes were a force at the net as they earned a season-high 15 blocks. Lauren Witte led the charge with a career-high nine rejections. Vanja Bukilic, Emily Londot and Rylee Rader tallied five blocks apiece and Mac Podraza had three denials.
Londot recorded her third double-double of the year on a match-high 20 kills and 12 digs. Bukilic hit .303 on her way to a season-best 16 kills. Jenaisya Moore joined the duo in double figures with 11 kills.
Once again, Podraza did a little bit of everything as she earned her second straight double-double behind 42 assists and a career-high 15 digs. She also chipped in five kills, three blocks and two aces. Kylie Murr and Hannah Gruensfelder posted 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
SET 1: The Buckeyes burned an early timeout as they trailed 12-7. Penn State pulled away for a 25-17 win.
SET 2: A 9-0 run put the Nittany Lions ahead 13-5. Ohio State tried to get back in the set but fell 25-13.
SET 3: The teams were evenly matched until three straight points put the Buckeyes up 15-12 and forced a Nittany Lion timeout. Ohio State was able to keep Penn State at enough of a distance to take the set, 25-23.
SET 4: Ohio State went on a 4-0 sprint to take an 11-8 lead. The Nittany Lions tied the frame at 12-all and the teams proceeded to trade points. A 6-0 Buckeye run opened the gap, 22-17, and Ohio State held on for a 25-22 triumph.
SET 5: Penn State needed a break after Ohio State scored five straight points. The Nittany Lions used their second timeout down 10-6. The Buckeyes tallied the last four points of the match to complete the comeback, 15-8.
