COLUMBUS, Ohio – After helping the Ohio State softball team to a 3-1 opening weekend, rookie designated player Avery Clark received the first accolade of her Buckeye career as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Clark came out swinging during her first weekend in Scarlet and Gray with a .545 batting average, .818 slugging clip and .615 on-base percentage through four games at the Carolina Classic. She also tallied six hits, drove in three runs and hit above .500 in three outings.
In the opener against No. 19/21 South Carolina, she went 2-for-3 at the plate. The Prospect, Ohio, native stepped up her offense the following day on the first home run of her career, a two-run shot that put the Buckeyes ahead for good in their 13-5 win over North Dakota State. She also slugged 1.250 and had five total bases versus the Bison. Clark was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk in Ohio State’s 10-inning walk-off 5-4 victory over UNC Greensboro on Sunday.
Clark was part of an Ohio State offense that outscored its opponents by a 25-12 margin. As a team, the Buckeyes batted .344 with 45 hits, 23 RBI, six stolen bases and five home runs.
