COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 25-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team defeated No. 10 Oklahoma State, 4-3, in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match in Stillwater, Okla., Sunday. The Buckeyes earn a spot in the ITA Team Indoor Championship, set for Feb. 7-10 in Chicago, with the win.
This is the second year in a row Ohio State went on the road and won two matches on ITA Kickoff Weekend to advance to National Indoors. The Buckeyes will be making their fourth appearance in the 16-team tournament in the last five years.
Ohio State defeated No. 24 Wake Forest 4-0 in their first match of the season in the ITA Kickoff Weekend opening round Saturday. Oklahoma State is now 5-1 on the year.
Against the Cowgirls, the Buckeyes fell just short of claiming the doubles point. The teams split the first two doubles matches, with court one coming down to a tiebreaker, where Oklahoma State prevailed for the early 1-0 lead.
Danielle Wolf then notched a straight-set singles win to even the score at one. The remaining five matches all went to three sets. No. 58 Irina Cantos Siemers and No. 125 Kolie Allen secured wins to bring Ohio State the lead, 3-1. The Cowgirls won the next two matches to tie the score at 3-all. No. 11 Shiori Fukuda clinched the team victory for the Buckeyes, winning the final four games in the third set for the defeat of Oklahoma State's No. 16 Lisa Marie Rioux.
Quoting Coach Melissa Schaub
"We had to fight through a lot today. That was one of the toughest places we have ever played and Oklahoma State deserves a lot of credit. It was a hard-fought match on both sides. Shiori has worked so hard over the years and to see her come up with the win, under those circumstances, was amazing to watch."
Quoting redshirt senior Danielle Wolf
"Our team has worked so hard for this. Making it to National Indoors was a goal of ours and we are going to keep showing the country how tough this team is. We are all excited to get the opportunity to compete against more top teams and make a run in Chicago."
Quoting Buckeye redshirt junior Shiori Fukuda
"I don't even know where to start, but it was definitely one of the best moments I have ever had in my life. The score was tied 3-3 and the match was dependent on me. Obviously, I was very nervous, but I was able to enjoy that moment. I could not have done any of this without the team, coaches, [athletic trainer] Helen and Buckeye Nation. We can't wait to go to Chicago and play."
