Francesca Di Lorenzo, a Buckeye women’s tennis All-American and NCAA doubles champion from New Albany, Ohio, earned the title of the 2019 Telvin Challenger Singles Champion this past weekend.
The ITF Women’s Circuit $60K tournament took place at the Aviva Centre in Toronto. No. 2 seed Di Lorenzo beat USA’s Dalayna Hewitt, Sweden’s Mirjam Bjorklund, USA’s Catherine Harrison and Netherland’s No. 3 seed Bibiane Schoofsf to reach the final. In the final, Di Lorenzo faced the No. 1-seed and No. 95-ranked Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium. Di Lorenzo took down Flipkins in two sets, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
“I’m super, super happy right now,” Di Lorenzo said to TennisCanada.com following the match. “To be able to pull it out, especially in two sets. It was a tight second set and a tight first set but I just stayed with it and stayed with my strategy so I’m happy the way I executed it.”
The 22-year-old started off 2019 ranked 166 in singles and is currently a career-high No. 121. She had 35 wins and 25 losses during 2019. She traveled all across the world ranging from Great Britain to Japan to Italy and more.
The title was her fourth ITF tournament win and first this year. She claimed the 2018 $25K in Wesley Chapel, Fla., the 2016 $25K in Winnipeg and the $10K in Austin Texas in 2015.
