Luna Dormet, a junior on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, was chosen to represent France in the Master’U in Grenoble, France, Nov. 29-Dec. 1. Dormet comes to the Buckeyes from her hometown in Tours, France.
Each year, starting in 2006 the French University Sports Federation invites 20 university national teams to participate in Master’U BNP Paribas. There are eight total countries that will be represented in the tournament: France, Germany, Belgium, United States, China, Great Britain, Ireland and Italy.
Each team is comprised of three men and three women currently enrolled in a university. Each match includes two women’s and two men’s singles matches, a men’s and women’s doubles match and a mixed doubles match (if necessary to break a tie).
“I am so excited but also very honored and proud to able to represent the colors of my country,” Dormet said. “It’s been a long time since the French team has won this competition, so my goal is, of course, to win it and enjoy it as much as I can!”
Ohio State head coach Melissa Schaub coached Team USA at the Master’U in 2016 and 2017. In 2016, Schaub was one of two coaches on the staff for the Team USA squad that won the Master’U BNP Paribas International Collegiate Team Competition in Marcq-en-Baroeul, France. She reprised her role in 2017, with Team USA finishing second.
“The Master’U is one of the best experiences I have had in tennis. It’s amazing to see so many great players from different countries all come together to compete for their country. It’s an experience that Luna will never forget,” Schaub said. “Luna is just an absolute team kid. She is going to represent France extremely well. I know this means a lot to her and we couldn’t be more proud and excited for her. I hope she will be giving some ‘Go Bucks’ over there while competing.”
Dormet, who transferred to Ohio State after spending her freshman year at Texas A&M Corpus Christie, led the team in singles victories, going 28-7 overall, as a sophomore. This fall, she notched four wins and two losses. At both the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and Debbie Southern Fall Classic, Dormet advanced to the quarterfinals.
