Rio grande, p.r. – Ohio State sophomore Jeg Coughlin III opened the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday with a round of 2-under 69 and is tied for ninth after the first round.
Coughlin III led the Buckeyes who posted an opening round 293 (+9) and sit in 11th place. Coughlin made five birdie in his opening round.
Redshirt-senior Josh Wick, who is playing in his first stroke place event of the year, carded an even-par 71 and is tied for 25th. Will Voetsch shot a 4-over 75 while Daniel Wetterich posted a 78 and Will Grimmer came in with an 80.
Oklahoma holds the team lead after 18 holes at 10-under par while NC State’s Stephen Franken fired a 62 and has a five-shot lead.
The teams are playing the par-71 Ocean Course this week at Rio Mar Country Club. There is also an individual tournament being played on the par-72 River Course. Buckeyes Caden Orewiler and Kevin Stone are competing in that event. Orewiler made five birdies and an eagle in his opening round of 2-under 70 and he is tied for third, just two shots back. Stone opened with a round of 6-over 78.
The second round of the team tournament will begin at 7 a.m. ET with a shotgun start. The Buckeyes are paired with Maryland and Marquette and will start on holes 12-15.
